Mad Men

Forget Jackie or Marilyn… Are you a Joan or a Peggy?

If you’re a Mad Men freak like me, you’re probably psyched that it’s finally back (and sad that it will soon be over).  Last Sunday’s episode was really just setting up the characters for the final episodes, but one scene between Joan and Peggy really got me thinking.

I have always identified with Joan in a way.  We’re not exactly alike….but we have very similar body types, and I really identify with her when she gets treated differently by men.  They flirt and make comments but never really respect her because they just see her as a set of boobs (when it’s really the guys who are the boobs, ladies, m’right?). buy Lasix 40mg

Only making things worse, Joan never gets to have a camaraderie with women because they are envious of the way men look at her (ironically, because it feels more degrading than flattering most of the time).

Peggy makes a comment that Joan would be treated differently if she dressed differently.  That really got me going…. Joan’s outfits are stylish and office appropriate.  Even if she dressed like Peggy, she would still get attention… it’s just how she is built.  Some women are just built with a fuller bust (I’m not going to defend women who bought their boobs, sorry ladies, you’re on your own)…. but those of us who grew them ourselves did not choose to… yet we get treated as if we only went through puberty for the attention. buy nexium 40mg

Now, at this stage you’re probably thinking that I’m crazy for expecting anyone to sympathize with a gorgeous woman with curves-for-days… but the truth is, Joan doesn’t have a friend on either side.  Men only see her for sex… they won’t do business with her, and they won’t marry her (well one did, but he was a loser).  On the flipside, women only see her as competition and not as a friend. buy levaquin 750mg

Note: The ironic thing is, men are not lining up to marry Joan or Peggy… they marry the stick-straight size zero Bettys and Megans…. those are the women we should gang up against… kidding… well maybe….

What I’m saying is, instead of seeing other women as the enemy, or being envious of their bodies or their life, we should support each other.  I have a lot of theories about what may happen to the characters of Mad Men… but I really hope Joan ends up happy… (and Christina Hendricks has a long and successful career, we need more women like her in Hollywood)… and she finally finds a friend

I’d love to hear you thoughts…

Dark Florals For Every Personality

ModCloth dress dark floral 4 differnt looks

I’ve been hearing that dark florals are going to be big for Fall.  In my opinion they are timeless, seasonless, and ageless.  So I decided to take this ModCloth dress and style it 4 different ways, to show how versatile this basic dress is.  This was especially challenging for me because this dress is actually navy and I usually wear black.

This is my favorite look.  It’s very Grace Kelly/Betty Draper.  I paired this dress with pearl earrings, nude pumps, and a classic straw purse.  I finished this look with a peachy pink lipstick.  This is a great look for work or a special luncheon. (more…)

Retro Recipe Redo: Iceberg Wedge Salad

My boyfriend and I have bonded over a mutual love of Mad Men.  So for the mid-season finale I decided to make his favorite salad, the Iceberg Wedge Salad.  I adapted this one from Giada De Laurentiis.  I basically followed her recipe, but I used light sour cream… and since Giada uses buttermilk, this dressing is naturally lower in fat than most.

How to Find Your Personal Starlet Style

There’s one thing Hollywood Legends have in common (besides money, of course) and that’s a signature look.  True Glamour Icons think of themselves as a brand, and they rarely stray from that.  Can you imagine Elizabeth Taylor without diamonds?  Or Gwen Stefani without her cool girl chic look?  Of course not… that’s because these Starlets found their “look.”  If you are going to be an Everyday Starlet you need to find a signature look that suits you.  Finding your style is a long process, and it may (and probably will) evolve over time. Watching the Boob Tube

Most Starlets have a busy life, so they rarely have time to watch television.  However, sometimes a Starlet just likes to relax in front of the Boob Tube.  Some of her favorite shows include:

Game shows

Lana Turner was especially fond of any game show on TV.  A little competition is always a thrill.  Dancing with the Stars is a favorite…. mostly for the costumes.

A Starlet loves nostalgia.  That’s why her first choice for television watching will usually be classic sitcoms.  Her favorites include I Love Lucy and Golden Girls, because a Starlet loves women who know how to do comedy… especially wearing fashionable outfits (and maybe eating some cheesecake)!

A Starlet also loves to catch classic movies when they come on TV.

Reality TV

A Starlet’s first choice for TV is not reality TV, but she will watch those shows occasionally….maybe one of the more glamorous ones like Project Runway, or something with David Tutera…and she has a weakness for anything with Hugh Hefner who she sees as the Ziegfeld of our day).  A Starlet is usually fascinated my psychology and she sees reality shows as a peek into someone else psyche.

Current Shows

A Starlet will be hooked on Mad Men because she loves nostalgia and men in suits.  She also worships the costume designer Janie Bryant, and has her book on her shelf.

Starlets don’t tend to be trendy, but she loves any show that gets her excited to keep watching, regardless of how popular it is.  A Starlet’s life is interesting enough, she does not need to watch things on TV just to have water cooler conversations….

…. exception: Fashion Police.  A Starlet cannot resist the biting wit of Joan Rivers, she likes that George Kotsiopoulos is adorable and so knowledgeable about fashion, and she always wants to know what Kelly O will be wearing.

Note: A Starlet tries to watch the news to stay informed, but it’s usually too depressing.

Now cozy up in front of the telly with something (or someone) cuddly.
