Most Old Hollywood Starlets, including Marilyn, Lana, and even Jackie O, will list their favorite film as Gone with the Wind. That is still a classic today, and if you have a chance you should definitely take a day off and watch it…

You may be surprised to learn that Starlet’s love to read. They love to learn about things that they are interested in, and to read great literature…. and a Starlet cannot resist a good Old Hollywood autobiography. Here are some suggestions for great books that should be in every Starlet’s library:
If your life is a movie, that means you should always be ready for your close-up. Starlets have a very French way of looking at beauty. In America, we just cover up our flaws. The French way, and now your way, is to take good care of yourself and your skin, so that cover up is a last resort. Now if you are already getting your exercise, and eating right, you are already ahead of the game. You skin will have a natural healthy glow. And I’m sure we all know that getting enough sleep and avoiding smoking are extremely important to a great complexion. But a great skin care routine is essential. Finding the proper routine is (like exercise or diet) a very personal thing. I have been to dermatologists and they are usually not all that helpful with basic skin care (although definitely seek then out if you have a serious skin condition). I find that good old trial and error is the best method. Yes, it can be time consuming, but once you have a plan that suits your needs, it should only take a few minutes out of your day to maintain.
I should first emphasize the importance of avoiding the sun. While some Old Hollywood Starlets did suntan, they didn’t really know the dangers back then. If you really need some color, I suggest a spray tanning booth, although those can eat up your time and money. I emphasize that you learn to love the skin you’re in. Wear sunscreen, avoid the sun when possible and embrace your own beautiful skin tone. Marilyn did….
“I don’t think sun-tanned skin is any more attractive than white skin, or any healthier, for that matter. I’m personally opposed to a deep tan because I like to feel blond all over.”-Marilyn Monroe
I should also note that a Starlet’s skin care products need not be the most expensive. In fact, many of her products may be from a drugstore. And I recommend starting there first for your trials. Make sure you read labels and find one that suits your skin type. The bare minimum you will need is:
Night cream– there are hundreds, so be sure to read labels. Sephora has a great search feature so, for example, if you have oily/acne prone skin you can search for skin care that is oil free. If you have wrinkles, you can search anti-aging….. etc. Since this product will be on your skin all night, I suggest spending a little more money on it to get the best product.
Eye Cream– pretty much same guidelines for finding a night cream. You can get a separate one for daytime if you’d like. Or get an eye cream for day and night use.
Lips– I swear my Elizabeth Arden 8 hour,,, I mostly use it on my lips (it doesn’t taste great but it will moisturize and plump lips like no other). I also use it anywhere that is extra dry and needs more than a regular moisturizer (like my nose during allergy season).
Makeup Remover– I cannot emphasize how important it is to remove your makeup before going to bed. Always remove it, no matter how tired you are. There are so many choices for makeup wipes to choose from and they are the easiest method, and I have some extra strong makeup remover pads from Almay for stubborn waterproof eye makeup. I know some women say that if they are going to bed with a man they don’t want to take off there makeup. I say, a true Starlet would not go to bed with a man who didn’t love her with or without makeup.
Tweezers– You must keep those eyebrows in check. There are many options like waxing. I have skin that is too sensitive to wax, so I just try to keep up my brow shape with good old fashioned tweezing a few days a week. That way they never get bad enough to be overwhelming. Either way, you should have a good tweezer on hand for any stray hairs.
These are optional, but still good to consider.
Face mask– If you have the time/money for a spa facial then go for it (but be careful and check their qualifications, I’ve seen some very bad results, so be cautious and ask a lot of questions to make sure they know what they are doing). You can also buy a make mask and/or scrub and do a home facial. One of my favorites is to use full-fat sour cream, it gives similar results to the more common yogurt mask, but I find its thinker so it doesn’t drip as much.
Marilyn used to bleach EVERYTHING. She wanted no evidence that she was not naturally a blonde. I wouldn’t say you have to go THAT far. But if you have thin dark hairs that you would like to lighten, then go for it. If you have a dark complexion thought, I would stick to waxing or another method.
Now that the skin on your face is taken care of, lest not forget the body. You can use your face routine on your neck and even your chest and back, but these are essentials for the rest of your lovely figure:
Body Wash– Similar to your face wash. Just find one that suits your skin type (which may be different on your body than on your face). Moisturizing for dry skin… Oil free for oily skin… etc.
Body lotion– No matter what your skin type, your body needs a moisturizer. But how heavy a moisturizer depends on skin type, lifestyle, climate, etc. And rubbing on body lotion after a shower is a great time to give yourself a nice massage and really appreciate the great body you have… no matter what your shape or size.
Sunscreen– if you’re out in the sun and your skin is exposed (even if it’s just in the car on your commute to work, and even on a cloudy day), make sure you use protection. Starlet’s always practice safe sun.
Body scrubs– these are optional but they feel great. I use scrubby gloves every time I shower because my skin does well with daily exfoliation. But if yours doesn’t then you can use then a few times a week, or get a body scrub and use it when you feel your skin needs it.
Massages– these are time consuming and expensive (and you should make sure you go to a reputable place) but they are so luxurious, I challenge you to get one and not feel like a movie star.
Baths– these are a personal preference and dependent on a lot of things, but when you think Starlet, you think bubble bath. If you have access to a tub, give it a try. Pick a time, ignore the phone, turn on some music, light some candles and find your favorite bath product. Bubble bath is an option, but so are bath salts, Epsom salts, or even some whole milk.
How you remove unwanted have is very personal… as personal as the hair that you decide is “unwanted.” There are so many hair removal techniques to choose from but there are two options that have stood the test of time:
Shaving: Yes shaving can be time consuming and it doesn’t last long, but it’s the simplest option, and you can do it every day if you’d like… and we all know that a Starlet may have to be smooth on a moment’s notice. And with such a busy life and social schedule, who has time to make a waxing appointment. A good razor and a great shaving lotion are essential. I have been using Paul Mitchell Super-Charged Moisturizer for over a decade. Yes, it’s a hair conditioner but since I started using it to shave I have never had a razor bump. Starlet’s love using beauty products in unique ways.
Waxing: this option lasts longer and will get you smoother, and may be a good option for an area like the bikini line that can get awkward to shave. Just make sure you keep up with your appointments because you never know when the movie of your life will have a love scene.
It’s always good to have a product on have to control shaving bumps. I like one from Bliss or Tend Skin.
No film close-up would be complete without a gorgeous smile. If your teeth are bad, then a good dentist is worth their weight in gold. If your teeth are in good condition but just need a little brightening, then pick up a whitening toothpaste (just be careful if you have sensitive teeth, don’t overdo it, and choose a sensitive teeth formula).
Hands and Feet
Pedis– if you want to pay for a pedi then go for it. But you can buy a rough, inexpensive scrub and a pumice stone and do one yourself. Make sure you take care of your tootsies. And absolutely nothing will make you feel more glamorous than red polished toenails.. even if you are the only one who sees them.
Manis– take care of your hands. Like with your feet, you can get them professionally done or do it yourself. Shape your nails, push back cuticles, and definitely use hand cream and a nail oil (can be just as simple as almond oil) every night before bed
Nail Color– a Starlet cannot resist a red painted toe, but finger nails are less important. You can match them to your toes, go all out with a half-moon manicure like Dita Von Teese, go with a neutral pink, or just go with a clean, well-cared for bare nail. It’s up to you. If you do go with color, I recommend the new gel polish. It lasts so much longer than traditional polish. And no Starlet has time to be constantly doing her nails. Once a week is ideal for hands. Feet you can usually get away with every other week.
I would also note that every Starlet has a few emergency extras on hand in her vanity and/or medicine cabinet. Band-Aids are essential for obvious reasons. You never know when you may nick yourself or get a bister breaking in new shoes. Also, Visine is a miracle product. It can sooth red eyes, but it also can be dabbed on a pimple or red spot, or blotted on a red sunburned face (because maybe you decided not to listen to my sun advice, it’s okay, every Starlet has an inner rebel). I always have Visine on hand.

No talk of a Starlet’s life would be complete without mentioning some lovely libations. I will say, although some Starlets of the past have had drinking problems, a true Starlet does not get drunk and sloppy. That would interfere with her glamour.
Champagne Now it’s no secret that Starlet’s love champagne. There is no occasion too small to break out the bubbly. The price of the bottle is irrelevant. Most true Starlet’s are uninterested in status and more interested in pleasure. So whatever champagne you enjoy the taste of is the best one. A great way to find your favorite is to host a champagne tasting party and try several brands at once to compare your favorites with friends.
Wine Starlets are not wine snobs… in fact Starlets are not any kind of snob…. but they know what they like and are always on a quest to seek pleasure. A tasting is a great way to sample different types of wine to find your favorites. You may be surprised to discover that your favorites are not the most expensive. My personal favorite wines are a mid-priced buttery Chardonnay (especially on a warm summer day) and an inexpensive Australian Shiraz (when it’s chilly and you just need the red).
On the occasion that a Starlet is in a dive bar, or any environment where she questions their cocktail making ability, she sticks to simple 2 ingredient drinks like Vodka and cranberry juice (Lana Turner’s drink of choice) or a traditional gin and tonic.

An Old Hollywood Starlet’s diet can be a hard one to examine… mainly because they are usually signs of the times. We have had a vast change in our thinking about food over the years so I would not advise following a star of the 1940s or 1950s diet exactly. But there are a few lessons we can learn as a few of them were ahead of their time.
Start the day with a pick-me-up
You are now the star of your own movie, and as a movie star, you have a very exciting life. So if you are not a morning person (and really, what movie star is?) you probably need some caffeine in the morning. Now many Starlets drink coffee, and if that’s your preference then go for it. They have discovered many health benefits to drinking coffee (just be careful of the excess sugar and cream). If you’re like me, as well as vintage starlet Lana Turner and current glamour queen Dita Von Teese, and coffee is not your thing (in Lana’s case she gave it up because she was afraid of staining her teeth) then you can drink tea. Green, black, herbal… whatever your preference!
No matter what your drink of choice, you will never see a true glamour girl rushing off in sweatpants to the coffee shop to get a mocha latte-a-ccino. If you don’t have a significant other or personal assistant to get one for you, I suggest making your coffee/tea at home. You will save money, you won’t have to wait in line, and you can enjoy your beverage of choice in the comfort of your own home.
Note: if you need a pick-me-up later in the day, by all means stop at a coffee/tea shop, but shop around and try to find one with a nice atmosphere and pleasant service. Give your time and money to businesses that treat their customers well and you will be in a better mood all day and feel like the Starlet that you are.
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day
I never really understood people who don’t eat breakfast. I would be chewing on my own arm by lunch if I skipped the first meal of the day. That does not mean that Breakfast should be large, fatty, and filling. On the contrary, it should be healthy (except for special occasions like holidays and vacations when you can go all out). Many Old Hollywood Starlets started their day with oatmeal (like Grace Kelly, and Marilyn Monroe on the occasion she didn’t sleep through breakfast). A small bowl of oatmeal is still a great choice (I recommend starting with oats and mixing your own with milk or almond milk, cinnamon, honey, and maybe even some berries… the pre-packaged stuff is full of preservatives and not that much quicker to make).
Modern day glamour girls can do green smoothies. They are new and trendy but they have the Dita Von Teese stamp of approval (and they really do taste better than they look). Ms. Von Tesse swears by The Beauty Detox Diet. It’s a book worth checking out.
Many of the old studio system starlets also started their day with grapefruit. It’s still a healthy choice, but it has been known to counteract with some medications and some people just don’t like it. I recommend some fresh squeezed lemon in the morning. I put it in my tea but you could put it in water as well.
Try to keep lunch healthy
It’s okay to treat yourself once in a while but most Starlets (past and present) know that a salad is the ideal lunch. Now what you put in that salad can vary based on your preference. Make sure you get lots of veggies and some kind of protein (many Old Hollywood Stars were way ahead of their time with the low carb diets). I would also recommend a simple dressing of olive oil, salt and pepper and your choice of vinegar (or my personal fav: lemon juice… I always keep fresh squeezed on hand).
Learn to love cooking
Okay, so many Hollywood Starlets did not cook, they didn’t have the time and most had “people” to do those things for them. If you really hate cooking I suggest you marry rich so you can hire a chef. If that is not an option (or even if it is) I think you should fall in love with your kitchen time. Cooking can be meditative and spark creativity, and there is nothing that makes you feel more feminine than putting on a beautiful apron getting some pretty kitchen gadgets and making a meal for yourself and your loved ones. I’m not suggesting you need to become the next Top Chef. I’m just suggesting you find a few basic recipes and give them a try. Have fun with it!
Keep things spicy
Lana Turner believed that hot sauce would help rid your body of toxins. So she carried it around with her and put it on everything. One thing we do know is that spicy foods help speed up your metabolism. So why not try some (be careful if you have a sensitive stomach).
Keep dinner traditional with a twist
Many Starlets of the past had a meat and potatoes dinner which was a sign of the time. However, a balanced meal of protein (chicken, fish, etc), with a side of veggies, and a potato (try a sweet potato for more nutritional value), is still the ideal way to end a day. You can even have a little of your favorite ice cream for dessert (Marilyn did… her fav was vanilla).
Note about eating meat: Many Old Hollywood Starlets were very big animal rights activists. However being a vegetarian/vegan was not as popular back then, and they didn’t have the advancements in balanced meatless foods. Nowadays there are limitless meatless options, and if things had been like that back in the 1950s it’s likely that more glamour girls would have gone this route. If that is your preference go for it. Just be sure you are getting enough protein and nutrients from your meals
We all know the first think a movie star does when getting ready for a film role is to get in shape. So if your life is a movie, you should be in shape for it. That’s why today we will talk about how to get in shape like an Old Hollywood film star. Now first I want to mention that this will not be a lesson in how to get as skinny as possible, I much prefer my starlets with some curves. I also do not believe in working out to look like someone else. I think every woman should be the healthiest and most gorgeous version of themselves that they can be.
I will also skip all of the reasons why working out is important… you can get that list from any fitness magazine… and I will spare you the lecture about how you need to make time for fitness because I think we all know that by now. I also will say that I truly believe the philosophy that the best exercise routine is one that you will stick too. So if you already have a workout plan then great! I would like to offer some advice about some possible ideas to mix it up. Heed the advice of my favorite current day throwback glamour goddess Dita Von Teese:
Hula hooping class. Keeping fit is easier with variation. My regime: pilates, ballet, dressage & now hooping! I’d like to try fencing next.

One thing I find extremely important is to find a workout that celebrates being a woman. I’m fine with weight lifting… after all Marilyn did it. She had a weight room in her home and jogged before it was trendy. But I also encourage you to find some exercises that help you appreciate your womanly form.
Every good workout routine should have a balance of Cardio and Strength Training, and definitely include some stretching. Here are some suggestions to spark your interest. Choose some from each category, and mix it up so you don’t get bored….
Running– this is your most efficient go to cardio. Marilyn did it to keep her curves under control. Great calorie burner but can be hard on your joints. Be sure to wear proper footwear.
Swimming- If you have a pool and live in sunny weather, (or if you’re wealthy enough to have your own indoor pool, in which case, let’s be friends) then this can be a fun and inexpensive way to workout. Just be sure to wear a swim cap (they may not look pretty but chlorine green hair looks worse, and you can always take it off seductively as you get out of the pool.

Bike Rides/Leisurely walks- These are easier on your joints and can be fun on a beautiful day. I love going for long walks alone with just my thoughts. I find it brings out my creativity.
Tennis- If you have a partner and access to a court, there is nothing more glamorous than a sport that encourages you to wear a skirt.
Hula Hooping- This has become very trendy, but it is such a pin up inspired workout. Especially since it will whittle your waist into a gorgeous hourglass figure.
Dancing- Ballroom (especially Latin and Swing dances)/Tap/Jazz- Ballroom dance teaches you how to work with another person. So it’s perfect for couples 9plus you get to work out in heels). Tap and jazz classes are great workouts as well and can be fun. This is the perfect workout choice if you would like to turn the movie of your life into a musical.
Horseback riding- Another activity that can be expensive unless you have the access. But you will feel of Elizabeth Taylor doing it you may just be moved to buy some new diamonds and get married… again!
Fencing- if it’s good enough for Ms. Von Teese then it should be good enough for you!
Ideally you want to work your core because the goal is of course hourglass sass…
Ballet- this exercise celebrates grace, balance, and lean muscle. It is the perfect woman’s workout.

Pilates- based in ballet, Pilates is the ultimate in core workouts and is great for someone who finds ballet classes intimidating.
Yoga-it’s popular for a reason. You can gain strength and balance as well as get a great stretch. There are dozens of yoga styles to choose from, so do your research before attending a class so you’re sure you have the class that suits your needs.
Belly dance- I personally believe that every woman should try this once in their lives. Nothing celebrates the female form like belly dance. It’s known for being a good core workout but the intricate arms in this dance make it good for the upper body as well.
Free Weights- not the most feminine choice but still a great way to get stronger…. again, Marilyn did it. I suggest focusing on your own problem area. Try to build areas you think may be small, and tone areas you’d like smaller. Rumor has it, Lana Turner thought her butt was too small for her hips, so she did daily exercises to build a bigger butt. And Marilyn famously did bust exercises every day because of her fear of sagging. You can find great exercise ideas on Pinterest.

Golf- Great mind/body/focus workout and, since you’ll be surrounded by mostly men, it could be a great place to find your next leading man.
