How to Wear a Hat... with confidence - EverydayStarlet.com @sarahblodgett

I’ve done a lot of shopping this month (shocker, I know, wink, wink).  However, I haven’t had a chance to really test out my new finds.  So my October Favorites are small, but I have a few things I’ve really been loving that I had to share with you…

Don’t forget to hit the Subscribe button so we can be YouTube friends!

Here’s what I’ve been loving…

Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred– I’ve tried a lot of workouts in my day, but I have never seen results as quickly as I have with the first week of this workout… and that’s just level one!

October 2015 Favorites: Fitness, Beauty, Fashion, Etc

My Home Goods mug and my homemade pumpkin lattes, and caramel apple lattes with tea from Celestial Seasonings… they taste so sinful, but with just tea, almond milk, honey, and a frother, they’re definitely waistline friendly!

October 2015 Favorites: Fitness, Beauty, Fashion, Etc

For beauty products, I’ve been obsessed with my Shiseido Facial Cotton (which I bought in my Cambridge Sephora Haul), and my new dark circle concealer combo: Maybelline Age Rewind Concealer in Brightener combined with Neutralizer

How to Wear a Hat… with Confidence

If my relationship with hats was a Facebook status it would be “It’s Complicated”.  In my preteen years I had a bit of a love affair with hats (I blame Blossom, one of my favorite tv shows at the time starring Amy Farrah Fowler of The Big Bang Theory).  Basically any black felt hat with a faux flower on it I wanted to be on my head.

For some reason, I fell out of love with hats in high school and college.  However, in the early 2000s, when I was in my clubbing days, I had a fuzzy pink Kangol hat that was da bomb (and that saying was cool then as well).  I had a few trucker hats at that time as well, but when they went out of style I broke up with hats again.

I had just accepted that I would live a hat free life… until recently.  I’ve been seeing hats show up in the fashion world more often lately, but I just wasn’t really to take the plunge.  But on a recent trip to the new Primark in Boston I found a few inexpensive ones that caught my eye (the one I’m wearing, and this one from my Summer to Fall transition outfit).  I think hats and I may be back together.

If you’re thinking about getting together with hats, but you’re afraid to take the plunge, here are some tips…

Size does matter.  Not all hats are created equally, so try on a lot of them in different shapes and sizes to find the ones that go with your proportions.

It’s all in the timing.  Know when to wear a hat and when not to.  Traditionally women can wear hats indoors and outdoors… men have stricter etiquette rules about wearing hats, although many ignore them (my normally very laid back father can go on rants about how inappropriate it is for men to wear a hat indoors).  However, even for women, sometimes a hat is just not welcome.

Hats don’t tend to lend themselves to formal occasions (although fashion rules are made to be broken).  In addition, while it’s not a rule, I’d recommend anytime your doing any public speaking, or you need people to see your face clearly, skip the hat.

Be complimentary.  Your hat should be the cherry on top of your outfit sundae.  You can go for a contrasting look, like a menswear hat with a feminine dress, but make sure your hat works with the rest of your outfit and doesn’t compete with it. Treat a hat like any other accessory… because it is.

Don’t try to hide.  It’s a misconception that hats are for hiding (bad hair days, a pimple, etc).  Hats demand attention.  I saw a quote once that said something like, “you’ll always get more attention when you wear a hat.”  (I tried to find the exact quote, but it was a Google fail.)  I have noticed that I attract a lot of attention when I wear a hat, which made me self conscious at first.  However, now I figure why not have my Starlet moment… please, no pictures (big smile for the camera).

All About Aztec

All About Aztec

I love prints.. leopard, polka dots, stripes… but I never really got into the Aztec print trend.  I think it’s usually the colors.  Most of the Aztec prints I’ve found have very muted navys, oranges, and mustards in them… not my ideal shades.  So when I went to visit the new Primark in Boston (you can see my vlog here), I saw this scarf and fell in love.  These colors are so pretty, and the print just makes me feel like it’s Fall…. How to Transition a Summer Dress into Fall

How to Transition a Summer Dress into Fall

They say if you don’t like the weather in New England… just wait 5 mins.  While I admit to loving Fall, and being over the Summer heat, the weather here has gone from the 80s to the 50s… I need some transition weather desperately!  I wanted to take one of my Summer dresses and make it cooler weather appropriate, so here’s some tips… (more…)

Fashion or Bust: Taking Risks

Green Dress Collage

I’m still recovering from StyleWeek last week, so I’m going to keep this post short and sweet… kinda like my dress (see what I did there).  Seeing all the amazing local designers, and the fashionistas in the audience at the runways shows inspired me to take more fashion risks.  I was so tempted to belt this dress even though it’s meant to be left flowy.  But I took a risk and left it loose… even though us busty girls run the risk of being asked when the baby is due (unless you know someone is pregnant, please never ask!).  I added this heavy necklace to anchor the look, and paired it with some of my favorite shoes…. Tulle & Peplum: Audrey Hepburn meets Carrie Bradshaw

Tulle skirt, peplum top, ballerina, Carrie Bradshaw, Audrey Hepburn, fashion

I wouldn’t normally think to put a tulle skirt with a peplum top.  To be totally honest, I was a little afraid to pair this skirt with anything.  After seeing countless cotton candy tulle skirts styled every way possible on Pinterest, I’ve always been tempted to take the plunge.  However, my curvy figure always said “uh uh” (my figure can get quite sassy with me).  So in my closet sat this skirt… until one day, when I was doing an Audrey Hepburn makeup look (on the blog tomorrow), inspiration came over me and I decided to pair it with a peplum top.  I don’t really know where the idea came from… but Ms. Hepburn always makes me think of pink and femininity.  I added my new studded heels (which are a knock off of Valentino, and give the outfit a little edge), and a clutch shaped like a perfume bottle… I think I was channeling Carrie Bradshaw a little with that one!  I’m so happy with how the look turned out, and the black peplum made the tulle skirt a lot less intimidating for my curves.

Secrets of the Super Stylish #InspiredByInStyle

Fashion magazines have been an obsession interest of mine since I was old enough to read. One of my favorites is InStyle.  I get giddy when mine arrives in the mail.  They have a section in the mag every so often called, Secrets of the Super Stylish.  It’s basically a collage of questions for people in the style industry… models, designers, stylists, etc.  I have wanted to do my own collage for a while now.  Since I have finally mastered (that may be a strong word) PicMonkey, I decided to finally make my dream a reality…

How to Look Festive This Christmas Without Looking Tacky

Christmas Neutrals 6

With all of the bad Christmas sweater parties and kits, it seems as if looking tacky for Christmas is actually on-trend.  Personally, I prefer subtle touches of the Holidays in my outfits.  I devised a little cheat sheet for dressing festive but not tacky for Christmas…  think of it as Chic-mas…. Silver Maxi Dress Inspired By 90s Carrie Bradshaw

Sex and the City Carrie Bradshaw inspired silver maxi dress The Monogamist

Maxi dresses scare me… there, I said it.  I find they very often have spaghetti straps (the only kind of spaghetti I like comes with a red sauce), or they are loose and shapeless (making me look like I’ve eaten way too much spaghetti).  But when I saw this silver number at Forever 21, I just couldn’t help myself.  I ordered it, fully intending to be disappointed and return it… but to my surprise, it likes me… it really likes me.

For some reason it reminds me of the silver dress that Carrie Bradshaw wore in the Sex and the City episode The Monogamist, when she goes to the party with Big, then the party with Jennifer Aniston’s future fiancé, then waits for Big in the park… if you don’t know what I mean then catch up on your SATC episodes (especially the early ones from the 90s because the fashion is coming back).  I paired the look with a silver belt (because I like a little more shape), and a violet clutch (I checked the episode, and Carrie wore a purple clutch), did my hair in wild Carrie curls, added some Carrie inspired makeup, grabbed a Cosmo… and Voila! Instant 90s SATC glam… perfect for Holiday parties or NYE…. (more…)
