Wedding Planning Tips: 6 Month Update

Wedding Planning Tips

I came to the realization that my wedding is 6 months away.  I have mixed emotions about it.  On one hand, it seems like so little time to get everything done.  On the other hand, I can’t believe how much I’ve accomplished in such a short time being engaged.  While I’m certainly not a wedding expert, I wanted to give you some updates on my wedding planning and give future brides some advice about what I’ve learned so far.

First, let me give you some perspective.  Last November, when Paul and I first started seriously talking about getting engaged and planning our wedding, we figured we’d try to get married in October.  It’s really one of the few months in New England where you have any chance at all of good weather.  So we started ring shopping, and officially got engaged in December.  I’d heard so many stories of people taking 1-2 years to plan a wedding that I was afraid that we’d already cut it too close.  I feared we’d never be able to book a venue by October.  Fast forward to now, and our dream venue has been booked for August and I’m cramming 6 months worth of wedding planning into 2 months.  I’ve been basing my wedding planning on all of those wedding checklists, so here’s what I’ve done so far…

Budget

They’re not kidding when they say that you need to set a budget first before you do anything.  I will confess to being a budget virgin.  I’ve always been a shop first, ask questions later kinda Starlet.  But wedding stuff is SOOO expensive (everyone says it, but you really don’t realize HOW expensive until it’s your wedding).  I’ve had to learn how to budget really quickly, and I have a spreadsheet to prove it.

As overwhelming as it seems, I went through every single detail I thought I wanted for my wedding and estimated the cost.  This gave me a rough estimate of how much I realistically would need to spend to pull off a wedding.

I also studied every article and blog post I could find about saving money.  Some tips helped, but some were complete BS.  Here’s what I learned about wedding budgeting…

  • Not all wedding saving tips apply to all weddings.  Maybe a Friday/Sunday/Thursday wedding is less expensive in some places, at some venues, and with some vendors.  I looked into a Sunday wedding to save money, but I didn’t find a single vendor that changed their price based on day of the week. I did however get a deal on my venue by booking in their “off season”… hence the “getting married 2 months sooner than expected” phenomenon.
  • I’ve also read many places that having your wedding on a Sunday on a holiday weekend can same money.  I’m not going that route, but I did notice several vendors I researched charged extra for holiday weekends.  Just something to keep in mind.
  • You will need to prioritize.  Unless you’re an heiress, you probably can’t go overboard on every area of your wedding.  So you need to decide what is important.  For Paul and I, our priority is on things that will last forever.  We splurged on our photographer, videographer, and things like that.
  • Guest lists don’t affect the budget as much as everyone says it will.  Yes, the more people you invite the more space you need, mouths you’ll feel, and invitations you send, but that’s it.  You’re photos will cost the same, video will cost the same, a DJ/band will charge the same price for 50 guests or 100.  You may need a few less centerpieces, but don’t think cutting your guest list in half will cut your total budget in half.

I’m sure I’ll have many more budget lessons I’ll share with you along the way.

Set a Date

6 Months from now… I can hardly wait, and I’m paniced at the thought of getting eveything done in time.

Guest List

I have a spreadsheet for this too.  My guest list is quite small.  Paul has a small family, and I have a small immediate family but a very large extended family,  We decided early on that we would only invite people who had been actively involved in our lives during that last 2+ years we’d been together.

I will admit to being behind on my Save the Dates though.  The experts say that I should be mailing those out at the 6 month mark, but I haven’t picked mine out yet.  I should really get on that.

Book Your Venue

I mentioned above that we’d picked our space.  It was harder than I’d expected.  Paul and I wanted an indoor venue, someplace unique and memorable,  I think we’ve achieved both!

Plan Your Honeymoon

We’ve been back and forth on a few ideas, but no final decision yet.  I’d love to hear your favorite honeymoon/vacation spots?

Create a Wedding Website

Done, and done.  Since blogging is my life, I set mine up pretty quickly, and even bought a custom domain. I still need to fill in the details.

Start a Wedding Journal

I purchased a Smythson Wedding Journal when we first got engaged and I carry it in my purse.  To be honest, I mostly just use spiral notebooks for quick notes and spreadsheets for formal stuff. I should have saved my money on the pricey journal… but it’s so pretty!

Insure ring

I took care of that quickly… I’m way too paranoid not to. Since my ring is from Blue Nile, it was pretty easy.

Dress Shopping

I did a whole post about my dress shopping experience as well as my top dress shopping tips.

Top 5 Wedding Dress Shopping Tips

Officiant

I was lucky enough to have a close friend who is ordained to perform weddings.  He’s been hinting about the gig ever since Paul and I first got together, so this step was the easiest of the whole process.

Photographer

Luckily our officiant gave us a photographer recommendation that was amazing!   Paul and I could not be more excited to be working with Chelseadon’t miss out Old Hollywood Glamour Engagement Photo Shoot photos!

Videographer

This was a struggle.  As a YouTuber, video is such a big part of my life.  So I knew I wanted a videographer.  I had a very specific vision.  After a lot of searching, I finally found a videographer that shares that vision!

Pick Your Wedding Party

I actually toyed with the idea of not having a wedding party.  But Paul has one brother, and I knew it would mean a lot to him and his family that his brother be the Best Man.  So I asked my BFF to be my Man of Honor, and a couple that Paul and I adore to be in our party as well. Actually, my entire wedding party is men.  My mother teases me that it’s because I don’t want any other women stealing my spotlight… in the words of Cher, “as if!”

Register for Gifts

We’re actually not registering for very much.  We don’t have a house yet, so buying too much home stuff like curtains or sheets seems a little ridiculous.  The one thing I did pick out was a china pattern.  For some reason, I just always felt like a formal set of dishes was the one thing I would wait to get for my wedding.

Engagement photos

Check!  You can see my engagement shoot photos and some behind the scenes footage in this blog post.

Cake

It’s a big deal, but I wanted to nail down a caterer before I decided on a bakery.

Exercise routine

Luckily the weather is getting a little better so I’m been gettin’ my fitness on. I’ll be doing a fitness update soon… so stay tuned!

Florist

As much as I love flowers, they are just so expensive.  I’m looking into some non-floral decor options that I can use later for tablescapes or sell after the wedding.

Pick a Caterer and a Menu

I love food, so this one I wanted to put a lot of thought into.  I got a lot of estimates and did some tasting.  In the end I am very excited about the menu.  Paul and I designed on a menu that works with our theme but is also very “us.”  I think it’s going to be very unique and memorable!

Music

This was Paul’s biggest worry.  We decided on a DJ vs a band based on budget and the logistics of the venue space.  We both wanted to make sure we hired a DJ who didn’t think he was a comedian.  I’m a professional stand-up comedian, as is most of my wedding party, so we didn’t want someone who thought my wedding was an audition for comedy gigs. Paul was also worried that our wedding would be a techno disaster or turn into a high school dance.

The thing that surprised me was how quickly DJs get booked.  If you’re booking a DJ for your wedding, I highly recommend starting early!

Phew!  That’s a lot of stuff.  I can’t believe I’ve accomplished so much in the last 2 months.

No matter how long you’re in a relationship with someone, when you get engaged there are bound to be some revelations.  For Paul and myself it was that in the 2 1/2 years we had been together we had no pictures together.  In the age of selfies you may find that hard to believe, but Paul doesn’t like being in front of the camera (you can probably tell from my blog that I don’t share that feeling).

This was made abundantly clear when we first updated our Facebook status to “Engaged.”  When you have a major life update with someone, Facebook collects all of the photos that you are both tagged in.  In our case, our “Engaged” collage was pics of cocktails we had made and photos of me and my BFF Jeff (who loves the camera like I do) with Paul in the background.  Some people actually had to ask me which one I was engaged to.

So when wedding planning started and I was making a list of wedding essentials, I knew that an engagement shoot was on that list.

Luckily, Paul and I were on the same page about the style of the shoot.  Since we share a love of old movies, Mad Men, and classic cocktails, we knew that we wanted an Old Hollywood Glamour style shoot with some black & white shots to fit our Old Hollywood Glamour wedding theme.

We were also lucky enough to find our wonderful photographer, Chelsea, who was totally on board with our vision!

So I wanted to share my Old Hollywood Glamour Engagement Photo Shoot Photos with my Starlets…

Things have been quite hectic here at chez Starlet.  With all of the weather changes here in New England (is it Spring, is it Winter, I wish Mother Nature would make up her mind!), and my busy schedule of meetings, blogging, and wedding planning, I’ve been feeling a little under the weather lately.  So I thought I would take this opportunity to update you on my life via my Instagram… after all, if it’s didn’t happen on Instagram, did it really happen at all?

I have been deep into wedding planning, and I’m quickly approaching the 6 month mark.  I’ll be doing a full update soon, so stay tuned!

I was involved in an amazing campaign with Target to promote swimsuit body confidence (we can all use help with that).  I selected this Target tankini for my pic

I went to see Hail, Caesar with P.  It was fun and full on packed with stars.  Since it was set in 1950s Hollywood I had very high expectations, and it wasn’t quite as great as I’d hoped.. but still enjoyable.

P and I like to have a weekend show that we marathon.  When Mad Men ended (sad face emoticon), we started Numb3rs.  It’s one of my favorite shows, and I got P hooked on it.  When we finished that we decided to go the reality TV route and watch The Girls Next Door.  P has actually been to the Playboy Mansion and got to meet Hef, so it’s been fun to watch this show together and get inside scoop.  I wish I had a dime for every time P said to me, “hypothetically, if we bought the Playboy Mansion….”

The Oscars Red Carpet is My Super Bowl

We’ve all probably heard the phrase, “the Oscars are the Super Bowl of Fashion.”  But this Starlet, takes that to heart.  Some people may spend the whole day (or even days or weeks) prepping/pre-gaming/obsessing over the footballs teams competing in the biggest night of sports.  But I do that for the Academy Awards!

I need my essentials…

I’ll be totally honest… I’m much less into the actual awards show than the red carpet… because that’s where the glamour is!

Here’s how I get ready for fashion’s biggest night, the Oscars Red Carpet…

Tweet: The Oscars Red Carpet is My Super Bowl http://bit.ly/1mKtL7c

Do you watch the Red Carpet?  How to you get ready for it? Do you have any pre-show rituals? Who are you most looking forward to seeing on the Red Carpet this year?

Which Elizabeth Taylor Bride Are You?

Elizabeth Taylor Bride Collage

Ahhh Liz, she has been a bride eight times… well, I think she’s had more weddings than that actually.  Since I’m a firm believer in taking inspiration from Old Hollywood, it got me thinking about all of Dame Taylor’s wedding styles.  Each one had it’s own personality.  So it got me thinking….

Which Elizabeth Taylor Bride Are You?

Princess Bride

Liz was quite young when she married Conrad Hilton, and her wedding was every little girls’ fantasy…and her most traditional of all her weddings. If you’ve been dreaming of your wedding since you were a little Starlet, and pinning a towel to your head as a veil just to daydream, then you’re a Princess Bride.

Second Time Around Bride

After such an over-the-top first wedding, Liz decided to make her second marriage to Michael Wilding much simpler.  No bridal gown in sight, she still looked stunning in a skirt suit…. Marilyn Monroe did something similar for her marriage to Joe DiMaggio.  While there are no rules about what’s appropriate for a second marriage, if a traditional wedding has you all “been there, done that”, then you’re a Second Time Around Bride.

Jet Setter Bride

Dame Liz and her third husband Michael Todd got married in both Spain and Mexico.  If your passport has more stamps than a post office, and you are allergic to staying in one place for too long, then you’re a Jet Setter Bride.

Tweet: Which Elizabeth Taylor Bride Are You? http://bit.ly/1Tb7MTH

Understated Bride

It’s not like our Liz to go low-key, but when widowed and marrying your best friends ex-husband (that would be Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher respectively), you don’t necessarily throw your wedding in everyone’s face.  Liz famously converted to Judaism for ol’ Eddie and they got married in a temple.  If you don’t like to call attention to yourself (hopefully not for the reasons listed above), then you’re an Understated Bride.

Romantic Bride

When our lady Liz married Richard Burton (both times) she was all about the romance.  She wore flowy chiffon, and flowers in her hair.  They were two artists (albeit very successful actors, but artists nonetheless). If you can’t pass a flower shop with out popping in for a bouquet, exchange poetry with your loved ones, and live for your DIY flower crown, then you’re a Romantic Bride.

Luxury Bride

When Liz married politician John Warner, she wore a fur trimmed coat and a turban…even on a farm Ms. Taylor brings the Old Hollywood Glam!  If you’ve already spent your whole wedding budget on your new shoes, so you’ll just get married at home, then you’re a Luxury Bride.

Eccentric Bride

Liz’s eighth marriage was to construction worker Larry Fortensky, and the wedding was held at Michael Jackson’s Neverland ranch.  If you’re COMPLETELY non-traditional, think a romantic date is tickets to the circus, and your most normal friend makes Marilyn Manson look like a preppy, then you’re an Eccentric Bride.

Which Elizabeth Taylor Bride are you?

My First Bridal Expo Review

My First Bridal Expo Review

I’ve always been curious about Bridal Expos.  I’d never experienced one and my curiosity has always been piqued.  So when I had the opportunity to go, I thought this would probably be my only chance to find out what they’re like.  To my surprise, my fiance, P, wanted to go with me and see what they were all about.

I think he quickly regretted that decision the minute we walked in the door.  Well, actually, the first think he saw was a vintage Rolls Royce, so that got him a little excited.

Soon after that though it was a sea of hard sell salespeople at booths grabbing you and asking rapid fire questions: “Do you have a venue?”, “Do you have a caterer?”, “Do you own a home?”… one guy kept trying to get me to sign up for a raffle for new home windows… I don’t own a home, and I don’t know what that has to do with wedding.

I went to sign up for a TJ Maxx/HomeGoods gift card.  P tried to disuade me.  “Don’t give them your contact information”, he warned.  “I shop there enough, I think they already know more about me than I know about myself,” I justified.

I was interested in the fashion shows, which I think ended up being less about wedding dresses and more about bridesmaid dresses… well, actually more like prom dresses that they try to pass off as bridesmaid dresses.  Either way, I’m not having bridesmaids, so it didn’t really help me much.

The highlight of the event was seeing the Fred Astaire Dance School do a performance.  I don’t know if I’ll convince P to take dance lessons, but I may have to try.

If you want to see all the action, be sure to check out my vlog…

All in all, I’m glad I gave in to curiosity and went to the expo… but I was so overwhelmed that I don’t think I learned as much as I was hoping.

Have you been to a Bridal Expo?  What was your experience?

How to: Fall Fashion Colors for Cool Skin Tones - EverydayStarlet.com @SarahBlodgett

Hello Starlets!  If this blog post was an episode of Friends it would be called: The One Where I Make Excuses For Not Posting This Week.

I usually hate it when bloggers apologize for not keeping a posting schedule, but I can relate to the guilt of feeling like you’re not keeping up with your blogging duties.  In the interest of full disclosure I wanted to share with you a few things that are going on this month that are making my blog posts and YouTube videos sporadic…..

First, I’m sure you’ve heard me mention that I’m getting married.  I try really hard to not be one of those people who can’t talk about anything else, however, it’s the most exciting thing that’s ever happened to me so it’s hard not to bring it up.  That said, my fiance and I have picked a venue (more details to come), and because of the venue’s schedule, our wedding date will be much sooner than we expected.  I’m sure we can pull it off (okay, not “sure” but hopeful), but it’s forced me to rush into planning mode, and I’m trying to cram 6 months worth of planning into this month so I can be on track with all the the suggested wedding timelines.  I’m hoping that when I get caught up and the big decisions are made, then I can focus on the fun details and be much more in my comfort zone.. that may just be wishful thinking, but I’m hopeful.

Second, in a mad rush to shed some holiday weight and get in shape for wedding dress shopping (poor planning on my part to do it after the holidays, but it’s now or never if I want a dress in time) I may have overdone my workouts.  This overexertion has resulted in a swollen foot.  I’m trying to rest my poor tootsie and hold off on my high heels for a while.  I didn’t think that would affect my blogging as much as it has.  Running around in cute outfits and setting up lights and camera equipment are just not practical right now.  Hopefully, I’ll be back on my feet (pun intended) soon so I can get back to bringing you the best content and fewer puns!

Third, I have actually been working a lot on some behind-the-scenes aspects of ES, and that takes up a lot of time.  I hate when it affects my posting schedule, but, as I’m sure most of you know, there is only so much time in a day.

I hope all of my loyal Starlets will bear with me… I promise to do my very best to keep giving you the best content I possibly can!

What’s Your Workout Style?

How to Stay Health Through the Holidays: Health, Food, & Fitness Tips

It’s always been my belief that when you look good, you feel good.  I don’t mean that you look good to other people, but that you look good to yourself (you’re the one that matters, right!?).

A huge part of looking and feeling good is exercise.  With such busy lives, it can be so easy to skip your workouts.   When I need a boost of motivation, I get myself a new fitness outfit.  If I have to sweat, I might as well look cute doing it.  Typically, I get so excited about wearing my new fashionable workout clothes, I can then translate that momentum into a workout.

It’s not a new idea.  Women have been stylin’ in workout wear from years.  That’s why I was so excited to see this video showing women’s workout style over the years.  It’s also fun to see they different types of workouts, and equipment that were popular in each decade!

Check out this video from Mode Media taking a look at 100 Years of Workout Style…

Now, I want to know… What’s Your Workout Style?

New Years Resolutions 2016

Navy Glam Makeup Look - EverydayStarlet.com @SarahBlodgett

Okay, so I’m a little late to the bandwagon with New Years Resolutions… most people have already broken theirs by now.  I’m actually not a fan of Resolutions… mainly because they tend to be hollow promises that people give up on in a week.  I AM a big fan of goals! Any occasion like a new year, a season change, or a birthday is a great excuse to look at your goals and reassess.

Here are some of my goals for 2016….

Keep a consistent posting schedule… I’ve been bad about this lately.  The holidays and life have really made if difficult to post consistently.  But I promise to get back to my 3-blog-posts-and-3-YouTube-videos-a-week schedule soon!

Grow my YouTube… I made it to my goal of 1k subscribers last year… here’s to 1k more!

Grow my mailing list…. if you haven’t joined my Everyday Starlet mailing list you definitely should!  You get every post right in your inbox… and an exclusive video just for subscribers!

Publish an EBook… I’m working on it now, and I can’t wait to share more details!

Plan my wedding… no biggie…just planning the most important day of my life… no stress there (in case it wasn’t clear, that was sarcasm)

Watch more Old Hollywood Movies for inspiration.

I’d love to know what you would like to see more of on Everyday Starlet.. I’m always open to suggestions!

Everyday Starlet is Engaged!

Everyday Starlet is Engaged - EverydayStarlet.com @SarahBlodgett

Hello Starlets!  If you haven’t seen on my social media and my YouTube channel, I’m engaged!  It is a very exciting time for me.  I finally found my leading man, and we’re planning our Hollywood ending… hopefully more comedy than drama. I’ve spent most of my life single, so at times I didn’t think marriage was in the cards for me, so I am very excited to share the experience with my Starlets.  Fear not, I won’t be making Everyday Starlet into an all wedding website.  I’ll be mixing wedding stuff in with regular content, but this is just such an amazing time for me, I couldn’t not share it with my favorite Starlets.  Here is my YouTube announcement…

I any of you have wedding advice for me, I’d love to hear it!
