How to Lose Weight with Snapchat

I will fully admit to being skeptical of Snapchat when it first got popular.  I’m still not fully sold on it… and with the new Snapchat vs Instagram Stories debate who knows which has the staying powder.  However, I have found Snapchat helpful for one thing… fitness motivation.  So I thought I would compile my tips for how to lose weight with Snapchat….

Pinning is Glamorous!

How to Lose Weight with Snapchat, Snapchat vs Instagram Stories, Fitness Motivation

How to Lose Weight with Snapchat

Post your daily workout.  Yes, you can do this on any social media, but I use each of my social media platforms differently.  Facebook is more for my personal connections.  Twitter is for connecting with brands and other influencers.  Instagram, the original, is usually a polished version of life, and I also don’t like to post on that feed too many times in a day.  However, with Snapchat you can post however and whenever you wish.  It’s just more casual and it doesn’t have to be a “perfect” pic.  So it’s the perfect place to take a quick pic of your workout outfit, your workout video, or anything that signifies that you’re gettin’ your fitness on.

The purpose of this is not really for anyone else, just for you.  I find it very motivating to put it out in the universe that I’m working out.  Sometimes people snap back that they are too, or that they’ve done the same workout, or just an encouraging comment.  Sometimes they don’t, but who cares… this motivation is for me.

Follow Inspiring Fitness People.  Again, you can do this on any social media platform (and you should), but Snapchat is much more real.  I find fitness snaps to be more relatable, and therefor more motivating.  I love following ViviannaDoesMakeup and I’ve started following Khloe Kardashian, who is already a great motivation when you see her body transformation… definitely check out her book… and I also have tips for getting Khloe’s fitness closet on a budget.

Get Sweaty with Your Snaps.  I try to make myself a deal: I can check my Snapchat stories if I’m working out while doing it.  I’m lucky enough to have access to a Stepper, so I won’t check Snapchat unless I’m on the machine breaking a sweat.  There are other exercises you could do, like a stationary bike or treadmill, or even sit ups and pushups.  It does’t matter what you do, just feel the burn… although don’t go for a walk or bike ride outside with your eyes glued to your phone, it’s dangerous in more ways than one.

Note: All of these tips can be used with Instagram Stories

Which do you like using more Snapchat or Instagram Stories? What’s your favorite fitness motivation trick?

The French Beauty Solution Review

I have a bit of a love affair with France.  I think it’s my inner Brigitte Bardot.  I devoured (pun intended) French Women Don’t Get Fat, and ever since then I’m all about learning how to live life with more Joie De Vivre.  That’s why I picked up The French Beauty Solution: Time-Tested Secrets to Look and Feel Beautiful Inside and Out by Mathilde Thomas….

Pinning is Glamorous!

The French Beauty Solution Review

The French Beauty Solution Review

The French Beauty Solution was written by the creator of Caudalie, a skin care brand you may have tried, but I’m sure have seen in Sephora.  To be honest, I was a little afraid that this book would just be a big advertisement for the skin care line.  I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t.

Yes, Mathilde does mention her brand, and some of her favorite products in her line (and who could blame her, I never hate on self promotion… BTW check out my Instagram, wink wink), but it’s never overdone.   And while I truly wasn’t looking for any new skin care products right now since I’m trying not to mess with my skin before my wedding, I definitely have some Caudalie on my wish list for after my big day.

While the main focus of this book is on skin care, there is also a lot about health and lifestyle.  I love the way Mathilde (don’t ask me how to pronounce her name, I’m hopelessly American) emphasizes how diet, stress, and other lifestyle factors can affect our beauty.  I also found the chapter on French diet to be a summarized version of French Women Don’t Get Fat… so if you’re looking for the cliff notes on that book this is it.

There is a lot of comparison throughout the book between the French way and the American way.  I really like how Mathilde seems to have a balance, and includes the things she admires about American culture instead of just having the perspective that French is better (in some ways they are, and others maybe not so much).

There is not much makeup in this book, because frankly the French don’t wear as much.  But as a skin care and general health book, this has everything.

So would I recommend this book?

If you enjoyed French Women Don’t Get Fat and/or you want to know more about the beauty regime and lifestyle of chic French women, then YES!

If you’re a “who needs skin care, I’ll just cover everything with makeup” kinda person, it may not be for you, but I’d encourage you to check it out anyway.

Have you read The French Beauty Solution?  I’d love to hear your thoughts.

If there are any makeup/beauty related books or films that you’d like me to review let me know? I’m always looking for suggestions.

How To Have A Classy Bachelorette Party

Some people only plan a wedding for the night of booze and strippers that comes along with the Bachelorette party (but hopefully not too many people.)  I’ve never been into the idea.  Maybe it’s my years as a stand-up comedian where I’ve seen too many shows destroyed by drunken bachelorettes with plastic tiaras and penis cups who thought they where funnier than the comics (they were usually just sad and annoying).  But I wanted no part of any of that.  I did like the idea of having my wedding party all get together for a night out to unwind and get to know each other before the wedding.  So when my Man of Honor, my BFF Jeff, wanted to do a Pre-Marital Sendoff I was excited about the idea.

So if you’re like me and you aren’t into a traditional bachelorette party, here are some tips for how to have a classy bachelorette party….

How To Have A Classy Bachelorette Party

How To Have A Classy Bachelorette Party

Get on the same page.  Talk to your wedding party about what you want so they don’t mistakenly think you want a lap dance filled night.  Some may be disappointed, but you’re the bride and hopefully you only have people in your wedding party who truly care about you and your feelings.

Have a co-ed night.  My wedding party is all men, so my party was a boys night out, but either way combining bachelor/bachelorette parties is becoming much more common.  Luckily my fiance feels the same way about bachelor parties as I feel about bachelorettes, so he was on board with combining them.  It made it a fun night for the whole party to get together and have people meet and get to know each other who may not be as familiar.

Think outside the bar.  Yes, going to a bar can be a great night out, but picking a venue that has some kind of entertainment or something to do can keep your party from just pounding drinks.  For my party, my MOH planned a dinner and reserved a table at a dueling piano bar.

Everyday Supermodel by Molly Sims Review

I first heard about Molly Sims book Everyday Supermodel just after I started Everyday Starlet.  The names were similar and I think our concepts were too: to help everyday people feel better about themselves….

Everyday Supermodel by Molly Sims Review

Everyday Supermodel by Molly Sims Review

I’m surprised it took me so long to read this book, but I’m glad I finally did.  I didn’t know much about Molly Sims before picking up this book, other than that she was a model and she’d been on some tv shows.  So I went into this book with an open mind.

The first chapter was about food and diet.  This was by far the hardest chapter to get through.  Molly is likable, but I think she tries a little too hard to be likable at times.  I didn’t find her food insights to be anything I haven’t already heard a million times and she was a little too into detoxes for my comfort level.  I have to admit that I almost gave up on the book before I finished chapter one.

I’m glad I stuck with it.  The next chapter was all about fitness, and I found it much more interesting.

The following chapter on fashion was okay, but I don’t think Molly realizes that we don’t all have a former supermodel budget.  She had some interesting information in the skin care chapter, and her makeup tips were great basics for the makeup beginner. I also enjoyed her chapter on hair care.

The final chapter was about her life and how she got to be a successful supermodel and actress.  I don’t know if I found it as inspirational as it was meant to be, but if you’re a Molly Sims fan I’m sure you’d love it.

So would I recommend this book?

If you’re a Molly Sims fan, then you’ve probably already read it.

If you’re looking for a general lifestyle book with beginner tips on everything from food to fitness to fashion to beauty, then it could be very helpful and informative.

If you’re looking for great in-depth advice about the above topics, then I’d recommend trying some other books…

For food: Kristin Cavallari’s Balancing in Heels

For fitness inspiration: Khloe Kardashian’s Strong Looks Better Naked

Pretty Happy by Kate Hudson Review

This time of year, when the days are longer and the sun is out more often, I seem to have the most motivation to get healthy and workout.  So that may be the reason that all the books I’ve been reading are in that theme.  Last week I reviewed Khloe Kardashian’s Strong Looks Better Naked… and this week I have a book by another California Starlet, Pretty Happy by Kate Hudson….

Pinning is Glamorous!

Pretty Happy: Healthy Ways to Love Your Body by Kate Hudson Review

Pretty Happy by Kate Hudson Review

I don’t know if this is the best strategy or not, but I tend to judge a book by how difficult it is for me to put it down.  When I love a book I’ve motivated to jump into each chapter and I feel like I want to devour the contents of the book.  I felt that way with Khloe’s book, and also with Kristin Cavallari’s book, which I also reviewed.

With Pretty Happy, not so much.

I’m not saying it’s a bad book, and I did read it quite quickly.  I’ve just read better.

I love Kate Hudson’s style.  Her looks are always a favorite of mine on the red carpets.  And there is no denying that her body in unreal.  However, something about this book was a little off-putting to me.  But what it was is a little hard to put into words.

First, I feel like Kate tried a little too hard to be a regular person in this book.  We all know she’s not.

Plus Kate, probably because of her Mom, is a little to New Age for me.  That’s doesn’t normally bother me, and it may not bother you, but it just felt like a little too much in this book.

Another thing is the pictures.  I obviously expect a book about health and fitness to have the author show off their great physique, and show beautiful lifestyle shots.  However, Kate’s photos were sexy… but not natural sexy, they looked like she was trying too hard to be sexy.  Clearly she’s confidant with her sexuality, and more powder to her.  But she’s a gorgeous woman, and she’s doesn’t need to try that hard.

All that said, I did like that Kate broke down everything she’s learned over the years about health and fitness in great detail.  I didn’t find the tips all that revolutionary, but if you are a complete novice to health then this book could be a good place to start.

I also like Kate’s take on finding a workout that works for you.  She loves pole dancing workouts because they make her feel womanly and sexy.  I tried a pole dancing class once and it was not for me (I have great rhythm and I love to dance, but put a pole in the mix and I’m a hot mess).  However, I do believe that every woman should take a bellydance class at least once in her life.  Nothing will make you appreciate your female form more!

So would I recommend this book?

If you’re a California spiritual kinda gal, or an obsessive Kate Hudson fan, then yes.

For everyone else…

If you’re feeling down, out of shape, and want to get healthy to work through stress but need the motivation, then pick up Strong Looks Better Naked by Khloe Kardashian.

If you want an everyday, down to earth, healthy lifestyle book, then pick up Balancing in Heels by Kristin Cavallari.

Have you read Pretty Happy by Kate Hudson?  I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Strong Looks Better Naked by Khloe Kardashian Review

I feel like I could call today’s book The Gospel According to Khloe.  But putting “naked” in the title probably gets the book more attention… and if the Kardashians know anything it’s how to get attention.

Pinning is Glamorous!

Strong Looks Better Naked by Khloe Kardashian Review

I was on the fence about reading Khloe’s book.  It just didn’t interest me at first.  Then I read an interview with her about her new body and her newfound love of fitness.  I found it really motivating… and I appreciate any fitness motivation I can get.  So I decided to pick up her book…. and I’m so glad I did.

The first chapter is all about Khloe’s fitness routine and how she’s been using workouts as therapy.  I’ve always felt that I’m in a much better place emotionally when I have a fitness routine, but Khloe really puts it all in perspective beautifully.

The next chapter is about diet.  Khloe has a very down to earth approach to healthy eating, and she even offers some cool recipes for salads and healthy meals that I’m dying to try out.

The rest of the book is really a self help book with advice from Khloe on how she is trying to be the best version of herself.  She does repeat herself a lot, but I still couldn’t put this book down.

So would I recommend this book?

If you’re so sick of everything Kardashian and just can’t stand hearing anything about them, then probably not…. although you don’t need to be a fan to like this book, and you may even become a Khloe fan after reading it.

If you’re a reality tv junkie who needs some motivation to get off the couch, then yes!

If you’re feeling down, out of shape, and generally unhealthy in mind and/or body, then hell yes!

Have you read Strong Looks Better Naked?  I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Lauren Conrad Celebrate Review & Giveaway

Imagine a younger, friendlier Martha Stewart, that you can relate to and would actually want to hang out with.  That’s Lauren Conrad.

In last week’s book review I gave my thoughts on Kristin Cavallari’s book, Balancing in Heels, and confessed that I had never watched an episode of The Hills.  So it’s a bit ironic that this week I’m reviewing a book by another Hills alum.

Pinning is Glamorous!

Lauren Conrad Celebrate Review

Celebrate is basically a party planning book, with tips for being a perfect hostess with the mostest.  She has general tips in the beginning, and then each chapter is dedicated to a different type of party that Lauren has planned.

I initially picked up Celebrate because I heard there was a chapter in it about wedding planning.  I know Lauren got married recently, and I had been getting wedding planning tips from her website, so I was excited to get more from her book.

I don’t know if the wedding chapter was as helpful as I was hoping.  I’m already deep into planning, but I do think her tips would be great for brides who are just staring the planning process.

For someone like me who does absolutely zero entertaining… that may change when I have my own home, but for now, nada…. I seem to have a huge collection of books about entertaining.  I’ve read Martha Stewart’s book, Pippa Middleton’s, and even Tori Spelling’s (which was actually better than I expected).  So I may be the most informed non-hostess ever.  Basically, I think I have read enough books to safely say that I really enjoyed Lauren’s book and have it mean something.

Lauren is, well, nice.  She seems sweet and genuine.  You can tell she is a perfectionist, a la Martha Stewart.  However, she is much more relatable.  She actually makes you feel like you could pull of a party like she can (whether or not we really can is still up for debate).

So would I recommend this book?

If you’re an entertaining novice and need some help, then yes.

If you’re an entertaining pro and need some inspiration, then sure.

If you’re a Martha Stewart fan girl, who can’t handle a laid back California cool party, then probably not.

Have you read Lauren Conrad Celebrate?  I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Balancing In Heels by Kristin Cavallari Review

I feel like I’ve been doing a lot of confessing lately on Everyday Starlet, and today’s post is no different.  I need to confess I have never watched and episode of Laguna Beach or the Hills.  I’m not going to pretend I never watch reality tv.. I’m only human, and I’ve kept up with the Kardashians more than I’d like to admit.  But I think I was at an awkward age when MTV’s reality shows we’re on the air.  I wasn’t too old for them per say, but I was already on to VH1 and E!’s reality offerings.  The extent of my exposure to Kristin, Lauren, Brody and the bunch was the clips they would show on E!’s The Soup (RIP one of my favorite shows) while Joel McHale made fun of them…..

Balancing In Heels by Kristin Cavallari Review

Fast forward to today, and Lauren Conrad’s blog is one of my favorites to check out everyday.  I’ll actually be reviewing her new book soon, so stay tuned for that.

However, I didn’t know much about Kristin Cavallari except that she was the “bitch character”, she had a short run on Dancing with the Stars, she married a football player, and she’s been popping out kids ever since.  So when her book Balancing In Heels came out I was fully prepared to pass on it.

Then I started seeing her book pop up on Instagram and people seemed to be enjoying it.  I was still skeptical until I found out that Kristin is a health nut and she had some great recipes.  So I broke down and bought it…. I am SO glad I did.

Much to my surprise I LOVED this book.  Kristin comes off relatable and likable, and she has such a great work/family balance that you can’t help but be inspired by her.

Her chapter on food is especially inspiring.  She is very careful about what she feeds herself and her family, yet I found her approach to it very practical.  I normally start reading books about health and my eyes glaze over… I’ve been dieting since I was 8 years old, so most of the information is not new to me… but with this book I couldn’t put it down.

So would I recommend this book?

If you love junk food, and get angry when people talk about leading a healthy lifestyle, then probably not.  Kristin may live in the Midwest now, but her health habits make her a true California girl at heart.

If you’ve been wanting to eat healthier and balance family and life but haven’t found the right source of motivation, then yes.  I found it motivating, hopefully you will too.

If you’re a health nut who’d like extra tips, or you’re starting a family and want tips for including your family in your healthy lifestyle, then absolutely.  Even if you’re not sure if you’ll like Kristin.  I didn’t think I would, but I’m so glad I gave this book a chance.

Have you read Balancing In Heels?  I’d love to hear your thoughts.

If there are any books or films that you’d like me to review let me know? I’m always looking for suggestions.

Advanced Style The Movie Review

Confession time: If something is a movie and a book, I always like the one I experience first the best.  I don’t really know why, but I’ve learned to accept that about myself.  So I was hesitant about watching the documentary Advanced Style after reading the book.

Pinning is Glamorous!

Advanced Style The Movie Review

Advanced Style started out as a blog created by Ari Seth Cohen.  Ari is a street style photographer in New York City, and his blog usually features women 60+.  Many are in their 90s.  Gives new meaning to the phrase, the 90s are coming back.

The styles of the women featured range from upscale fabulous, to artsy glam.  However, one thing these women all have in common, is a dedication to their own personal style.

I had heard about the blog, but I hadn’t started following it when I found out it was becoming a book.  I didn’t decide to pick up the book until I heard that one of my style icons, Dita Von Teese, was doing the Afterword.

After reading Advanced Style the book (I use the word reading loosely, because it’s mostly about the amazing photography), I found myself in a complete state of inspiration.  The women featured were just so passionate about life and style that it felt like taking a shot of Vitamin Chic.

After a euphoric experience like that, how could a movie ever compete?  I would soon have my answer, because Advanced Style then became a documentary.

In Advanced Style The Movie, we get to know several of the women featured prominently on the blog and in the book.  It’s very hard not to fall in love with these ladies.

While I still find these women inspiring, I didn’t find the movie as inspirational as the book. The book felt all positive, while the movie was much more “real”.

While the book was full of inspiring quotes and images, the movie was a reminder that life can be hard out there for a woman.  Some were in relationships, but many felt like the women that the Sex and the City cast fear they would grow up to be, stylish but alone.  It was also, a reminder that a group of women at any age will get competitive with each other… a trait I keep hoping women outgrow.  We are also reminded that death is reality we must all deal with… although there is a positive spin on the tragedy we experience in the documentary.

Overall, I unfortunately have become one of those people who sees a movie and snobbishly says, “I like the book better.”

So would I recommend this film?

If you love the book and the blog, then you’ve probably already seen it.

If you’re a fashion blogger and/or fashion lover, then yes.

If you’re looking for a shot of inspiration, then I’d read the book instead.

Have you seen Advanced Style, or read the blog and/or the book?  I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I’m doing these reviews regularly as a Saturday series, so if there are any books or films that you’d like me to review? I’m always looking for suggestions.
