The abundance of Christmas decorations and Christmas made-for-tv movies being forced upon me reminds me that holiday season is here. It has inspired me to try out some new party looks for the massive (if 1 or 2 is considered massive) number of party invitations I receive every year. I found this teal midi dress at Forever 21, and I loved that it was a modest length with coverage on top but yet still managed to be sexy. It is so sexy in fact that my mother dubbed it too “hoochie” to wear to meet my boyfriend’s grandparents…. (I wore this dress instead). I paired this teal number with pink and gold earrings (also from Forever 21), and a metallic gold bow purse that I’ve had for years. All that combined with my Ivanka Trump strappy heels (also seen here) make this a sexy yet comfortable holiday look…. (more…)
Thanksgiving is all about food and family… so it can be easy to forget about fashion. But I have to recipe for the perfect Thanksgiving outfit so you can cook, entertain, and still look fabulous (how good you feel may depend entirely on how pleasant your family is).
1 easy and chic updo to keep your hair out of your face (and the food)… mine is just clipped under for a 30s inspired bob, but you can try my quick and easy bun tutorial(more…)
Sometimes, in life, a path is clear… you know exactly where you are going and how to get there (well, I hear that happens to some people). For me, I’ve always struggled with what path to take. It always seems like I’m trying to fit in a mold and some parts of me don’t fit (insert obvious boob joke here). Now that I’ve been doing ES for a year, I really feel like I’m starting to find my style and voice. I’ve struggled with figuring what categories I fit into. I love vintage/retro style… but I’m not really a vintage blogger (and straight retro looks can feel costumy on me…although other bloggers can rock them hard core). I love following modern fashion trends… but I’m not super trendy. I’m still trying to find a balance on my blog (and in life) between modern and vintage. It’s not really that unusual. Everything old really is new again. I really want to focus my blog on taking retro vintage ideas and making them fresh and modern… and show everyday women that glamour is affordable and attainable in their everyday lives… (more…)
Mauve has always been a tricky color for me to wear… due to my platinum hair and skin-so-pale-you-can-see-my-spleen, I can look washed out very easily. But I fell in love with this blouse and became determined to make it work. I added jeans, over-the-knee brown boots, and a whimsical necklace. All that combined with a mauve lip, which will soon be the new “it” lip color now that the 90s are coming back…. (more…)
As a Starlet and a Comedian, the film Funny Girl has a special place in my heart. It’s a biopic of one of comedy’s most legendary sketch comedians, Fanny Brice…. played by legendary diva Barbra Streisand. Since Fanny’s birthday is today, only 2 days before Halloween, I thought it would be a fitting tribute to her to put together a Funny Girl Halloween costume. It was pretty simple. I had a leopard coat and hat already (I mean… what Starlet doesn’t?), did my hair in a side parted updo, and added dramatic makeup…. (more…)
The 90s are back. A part of me is excited that the trends and styles of my coming-of-age decade is returning, but a part of me is afraid that society can’t handle a revamp of the “fanny pack.” I normally concentrate my efforts on Old Hollywood, (like the 30’s, 40s, 50s, maybe the 60s). However, since I had a front row seat for the 1990s, I feel like I can predict where fashion and beauty trends are headed. Here are a few 90s looks I’m looking forward to….
Mauve lips- lips in the 90s all had a brownish tint to them. I’m not a fan of brick red lips, but the mauve shades of the 90s are sexy paired with a smokey eye
Model-off-duty look- Supermodels became the Starlets of the 90s. The look is meant to feel like you’re running around NYC going to casting calls. It’s usually a casual look, as simple as jeans and a t-shirt, with an added touch of glamour, like a statement necklace or a bold lip. (more…)
Last month we looked at Fall/Winter fashion trends that work for Everyday Starlets. Today we’re looking at beauty trends. As I mentioned in the fashion post, Starlets don’t tend to be trendy, but they always follow fashion and what’s current. So here are a few beauty trends that modern day Old Hollywood Starlets can rock….
Denim is not usually a Starlet’s first fashion choice. However, when worn fitted, cuffed and with a classic white shirt it can be a chic casual choice. No one rocked denim like Marilyn Monroe. So I grabbed my jean by The Limited, a classic white shirt by New York & Co (also seen here in this Elizabeth Taylor inspired look), and my Forever 21 boots and tried to recreate some of Marilyn’s classic looks.
I love recreating looks for my favorite Old Hollywood films. So when I saw Rita Hayworth’s pink suit in Cover Girl, I immediately tried to figure out how to make a pin on chain similar to the one she wears. Here’s how I did it…
