Pink is the most common association with femininity. Several Starlets have used this as their signature color, but in very different ways. Jayne Mansfield was all about sex appeal.
She even famously quoted about her signature color:

This time of year is the most popular travel time. So here are some essentials for Starlet travel…
There are so many rules and regulations about air travel nowadays, so it is important to keep that in mind when buying a suitcase. That said, a Starlet does not like to have a suitcase that blends in with everyone else’s… after all, how would she tell them apart at the airport. Starlets are known for having a signature lip color, and they are famous for having luggage that matches. Marilyn Monroe had red luggage to match her red lips, and Jayne Mansfield had a pink set to match her pink pout…
A Starlet’s life is exciting, no matter what her destination, so she needs a diary to keep a record of her journey.

A Starlet loves to read (yes pretty girls can be brainy). A Starlet always has reading material on hand. She prefers the tradition of books, but will use the electronic version if luggage space in limited.
A Starlet will always wear makeup when traveling, but jet lag and general travel can make a glamour girl look tired. Sunglasses are the perfect cover-up.
Airports and road trips can be smelly, a Starlet always has a mini-fragrance on hand. She picks from her fragrance wardrobe.
Unless you actually live in Hollywood or a warm climate (lucky you), you will probably need to have some cold weather clothing in your wardrobe. Here are your basics, and ideas for some glamorous options:
Every woman needs a basic trench coat in a neutral color and a fun coat in a bright color or print.
Hats can be tricky for a Starlet because they can mess up their hair. The solution is to wear ones that are so cute, you will want to wear them all the time.
A Starlet loves a scarf. Especially one that she can dramatically throw over her shoulders when exiting a room in a huff.
A Starlet needs her shoes to be stylish, but she also needs to walk glamorously in any weather. So she needs snow boots and/or rain boots that are fashionable and functional.
A note about furs: Old Hollywood Starlets wore fur. It was a sign of the times. Most of them were big animal rights activists, so I doubt they would wear fur today. Wearing fur is a personal choice. To some it is still a sign of luxury. In my opinion, if it is a vintage fur then go for it (the animal has already died, don’t let it be in vain). There are great faux fur options nowadays as well.

Your life cannot be a movie unless you have a costume department. Any actor will tell you that they never fully get into character until they get into costume. You want a wardrobe that fits your life, but also the life that you would like. You obviously want a wardrobe that flatterers your figure (the figure you have, not yourself minus 20 lbs, love your beautiful curves, and if you’re in an unhealthy weight range then work on your diet and fitness).
Here are some basics every Starlet should have in her wardrobe:
Printed Day Dresses– these can be any shape that flatters your body. They can be in florals or any pattern you love (every Starlet needs at least one polka dot dress). When you’re in a hurry to get out the door, nothing is simpler than throwing on a day dress
LBD- (Little Black Dress) in any shape, material, you like. It is the most versatile piece in your wardrobe
Sheath Dress– think Joan from Mad Men
Evening gown– this isn’t something you need to run out and spend money on, but ideally you should think about adding a formal gown to your wardrobe just in case the occasion arises.
Cardigans– this is a classic look that you can get in any color and throw on anytime it gets a little cold
Sweaters– the term “sweater girl” was created for Old Hollywood Starlets, so embrace that you’re your favorite sweaters in a flattering color and neckline
Long sleeve blouses– a basic white or a color, this is a menswear inspired wardrobe must for all Starlets
Plaid Blouses– for casual days, or country trips
T-shirts– basic long sleeve, puff sleeve (which make your shoulders look bigger… which makes your waist look tinier!)… there are so many styles to choose from. Pick your favorites for layering, going with dressier skirts and pants, and for getting some exercise.
Find a suit (preferably with a skirt, but if you love pants suits, go for it). Black is the most basic, but you can also pick a color. Wear the top and bottom together or separately.
Denim– Starlets do where jeans, but always well-fitted. They can be wide leg retro style, cropped and cuffed, or skinny jeans (but only if they flatter you figure).
Capris– these can be in patterns or solids. These are the perfect casual, everyday pants.
Pencil skirt– no Starlet wardrobe would be complete without a pencil skirt. In sold or pattern.
No talk of a Starlet’s life would be complete without mentioning some lovely libations. I will say, although some Starlets of the past have had drinking problems, a true Starlet does not get drunk and sloppy. That would interfere with her glamour.
Champagne Now it’s no secret that Starlet’s love champagne. There is no occasion too small to break out the bubbly. The price of the bottle is irrelevant. Most true Starlet’s are uninterested in status and more interested in pleasure. So whatever champagne you enjoy the taste of is the best one. A great way to find your favorite is to host a champagne tasting party and try several brands at once to compare your favorites with friends.
Wine Starlets are not wine snobs… in fact Starlets are not any kind of snob…. but they know what they like and are always on a quest to seek pleasure. A tasting is a great way to sample different types of wine to find your favorites. You may be surprised to discover that your favorites are not the most expensive. My personal favorite wines are a mid-priced buttery Chardonnay (especially on a warm summer day) and an inexpensive Australian Shiraz (when it’s chilly and you just need the red).
On the occasion that a Starlet is in a dive bar, or any environment where she questions their cocktail making ability, she sticks to simple 2 ingredient drinks like Vodka and cranberry juice (Lana Turner’s drink of choice) or a traditional gin and tonic.

Starring in the movie of your life can be difficult. Sometimes life is more of a drama than a comedy. Its times like that that a glamour girl needs to treat herself. There are also times when things are so good that all you can do is celebrate. In the last post we took a look at a Starlet’s everyday diet. In this post we learn to treat ourselves on special occasions, or days when you need to feel a little special. A Starlet’s treats run the gamut from high-end to low-end, after all, good food is good food, not matter what the price.
A true Starlet will never pass up an opportunity to make a morning more bearable. So on holidays at home special brunches are a must. When on vacation there is nothing quite like eggs, bacon and toast at a traditional diner.
When dining out, every Starlet loves a little Italian. It is the most glamorous of all cuisine styles, if for no other reason than the fact that there is usually a little Sinatra playing. The days of Old Hollywood had Romanoffs, which attracted all of the biggest stars. However, while a true Starlet will never stoop to a “fast food Italian joint”, the place does not have to be expensive.
Cheese, tomatoes, tortillas… what’s not to love? However the real reason Starlet’s love Mexican food is that they love any excuse to have a Margarita… maybe even some Sangria!
Hotdogs, Burgers, and Fries
Who can forget the scene in How to Marry Millionaire when Lauren Bacall, Marilyn Monroe, and Betty Grable sat around their new upscale apartment drinking champagne and eating hot dogs. Pure Glamour!
…and whether its beef, turkey, or veggie burgers….or traditional or sweet potato fries… a true Hollywood Starlet always appreciates good ole American classics… same goes for steakhouses
Both Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn used to treat themselves to a hot fudge sundae….bonus if it’s a classic, vintage style Ice Cream Shoppe.
Who doesn’t love that good ole’ stick to your ribs fare? I know living in New England, sometimes you just need some mac & cheese or some spaghetti and meatballs. Some days, when it’s snowy, the only acceptable way to have chicken is in a pot pie. Old Hollywood Starlets treated themselves to these foods and so should you… just not every day. I find these are foods you can learn to cook for yourself, either classic recipes or unique creations. A bonus is that cooking these foods burns calories so you don’t have to feel guilty about eating them.
An Old Hollywood Starlet’s diet can be a hard one to examine… mainly because they are usually signs of the times. We have had a vast change in our thinking about food over the years so I would not advise following a star of the 1940s or 1950s diet exactly. But there are a few lessons we can learn as a few of them were ahead of their time.
Start the day with a pick-me-up
You are now the star of your own movie, and as a movie star, you have a very exciting life. So if you are not a morning person (and really, what movie star is?) you probably need some caffeine in the morning. Now many Starlets drink coffee, and if that’s your preference then go for it. They have discovered many health benefits to drinking coffee (just be careful of the excess sugar and cream). If you’re like me, as well as vintage starlet Lana Turner and current glamour queen Dita Von Teese, and coffee is not your thing (in Lana’s case she gave it up because she was afraid of staining her teeth) then you can drink tea. Green, black, herbal… whatever your preference!
No matter what your drink of choice, you will never see a true glamour girl rushing off in sweatpants to the coffee shop to get a mocha latte-a-ccino. If you don’t have a significant other or personal assistant to get one for you, I suggest making your coffee/tea at home. You will save money, you won’t have to wait in line, and you can enjoy your beverage of choice in the comfort of your own home.
Note: if you need a pick-me-up later in the day, by all means stop at a coffee/tea shop, but shop around and try to find one with a nice atmosphere and pleasant service. Give your time and money to businesses that treat their customers well and you will be in a better mood all day and feel like the Starlet that you are.
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day
I never really understood people who don’t eat breakfast. I would be chewing on my own arm by lunch if I skipped the first meal of the day. That does not mean that Breakfast should be large, fatty, and filling. On the contrary, it should be healthy (except for special occasions like holidays and vacations when you can go all out). Many Old Hollywood Starlets started their day with oatmeal (like Grace Kelly, and Marilyn Monroe on the occasion she didn’t sleep through breakfast). A small bowl of oatmeal is still a great choice (I recommend starting with oats and mixing your own with milk or almond milk, cinnamon, honey, and maybe even some berries… the pre-packaged stuff is full of preservatives and not that much quicker to make).
Modern day glamour girls can do green smoothies. They are new and trendy but they have the Dita Von Teese stamp of approval (and they really do taste better than they look). Ms. Von Tesse swears by The Beauty Detox Diet. It’s a book worth checking out.
Many of the old studio system starlets also started their day with grapefruit. It’s still a healthy choice, but it has been known to counteract with some medications and some people just don’t like it. I recommend some fresh squeezed lemon in the morning. I put it in my tea but you could put it in water as well.
Try to keep lunch healthy
It’s okay to treat yourself once in a while but most Starlets (past and present) know that a salad is the ideal lunch. Now what you put in that salad can vary based on your preference. Make sure you get lots of veggies and some kind of protein (many Old Hollywood Stars were way ahead of their time with the low carb diets). I would also recommend a simple dressing of olive oil, salt and pepper and your choice of vinegar (or my personal fav: lemon juice… I always keep fresh squeezed on hand).
Learn to love cooking
Okay, so many Hollywood Starlets did not cook, they didn’t have the time and most had “people” to do those things for them. If you really hate cooking I suggest you marry rich so you can hire a chef. If that is not an option (or even if it is) I think you should fall in love with your kitchen time. Cooking can be meditative and spark creativity, and there is nothing that makes you feel more feminine than putting on a beautiful apron getting some pretty kitchen gadgets and making a meal for yourself and your loved ones. I’m not suggesting you need to become the next Top Chef. I’m just suggesting you find a few basic recipes and give them a try. Have fun with it!
Keep things spicy
Lana Turner believed that hot sauce would help rid your body of toxins. So she carried it around with her and put it on everything. One thing we do know is that spicy foods help speed up your metabolism. So why not try some (be careful if you have a sensitive stomach).
Keep dinner traditional with a twist
Many Starlets of the past had a meat and potatoes dinner which was a sign of the time. However, a balanced meal of protein (chicken, fish, etc), with a side of veggies, and a potato (try a sweet potato for more nutritional value), is still the ideal way to end a day. You can even have a little of your favorite ice cream for dessert (Marilyn did… her fav was vanilla).
Note about eating meat: Many Old Hollywood Starlets were very big animal rights activists. However being a vegetarian/vegan was not as popular back then, and they didn’t have the advancements in balanced meatless foods. Nowadays there are limitless meatless options, and if things had been like that back in the 1950s it’s likely that more glamour girls would have gone this route. If that is your preference go for it. Just be sure you are getting enough protein and nutrients from your meals
We all know the first think a movie star does when getting ready for a film role is to get in shape. So if your life is a movie, you should be in shape for it. That’s why today we will talk about how to get in shape like an Old Hollywood film star. Now first I want to mention that this will not be a lesson in how to get as skinny as possible, I much prefer my starlets with some curves. I also do not believe in working out to look like someone else. I think every woman should be the healthiest and most gorgeous version of themselves that they can be.
I will also skip all of the reasons why working out is important… you can get that list from any fitness magazine… and I will spare you the lecture about how you need to make time for fitness because I think we all know that by now. I also will say that I truly believe the philosophy that the best exercise routine is one that you will stick too. So if you already have a workout plan then great! I would like to offer some advice about some possible ideas to mix it up. Heed the advice of my favorite current day throwback glamour goddess Dita Von Teese:
Hula hooping class. Keeping fit is easier with variation. My regime: pilates, ballet, dressage & now hooping! I’d like to try fencing next.

One thing I find extremely important is to find a workout that celebrates being a woman. I’m fine with weight lifting… after all Marilyn did it. She had a weight room in her home and jogged before it was trendy. But I also encourage you to find some exercises that help you appreciate your womanly form.
Every good workout routine should have a balance of Cardio and Strength Training, and definitely include some stretching. Here are some suggestions to spark your interest. Choose some from each category, and mix it up so you don’t get bored….
Running– this is your most efficient go to cardio. Marilyn did it to keep her curves under control. Great calorie burner but can be hard on your joints. Be sure to wear proper footwear.
Swimming- If you have a pool and live in sunny weather, (or if you’re wealthy enough to have your own indoor pool, in which case, let’s be friends) then this can be a fun and inexpensive way to workout. Just be sure to wear a swim cap (they may not look pretty but chlorine green hair looks worse, and you can always take it off seductively as you get out of the pool.

Bike Rides/Leisurely walks- These are easier on your joints and can be fun on a beautiful day. I love going for long walks alone with just my thoughts. I find it brings out my creativity.
Tennis- If you have a partner and access to a court, there is nothing more glamorous than a sport that encourages you to wear a skirt.
Hula Hooping- This has become very trendy, but it is such a pin up inspired workout. Especially since it will whittle your waist into a gorgeous hourglass figure.
Dancing- Ballroom (especially Latin and Swing dances)/Tap/Jazz- Ballroom dance teaches you how to work with another person. So it’s perfect for couples 9plus you get to work out in heels). Tap and jazz classes are great workouts as well and can be fun. This is the perfect workout choice if you would like to turn the movie of your life into a musical.
Horseback riding- Another activity that can be expensive unless you have the access. But you will feel of Elizabeth Taylor doing it you may just be moved to buy some new diamonds and get married… again!
Fencing- if it’s good enough for Ms. Von Teese then it should be good enough for you!
Ideally you want to work your core because the goal is of course hourglass sass…
Ballet- this exercise celebrates grace, balance, and lean muscle. It is the perfect woman’s workout.

Pilates- based in ballet, Pilates is the ultimate in core workouts and is great for someone who finds ballet classes intimidating.
Yoga-it’s popular for a reason. You can gain strength and balance as well as get a great stretch. There are dozens of yoga styles to choose from, so do your research before attending a class so you’re sure you have the class that suits your needs.
Belly dance- I personally believe that every woman should try this once in their lives. Nothing celebrates the female form like belly dance. It’s known for being a good core workout but the intricate arms in this dance make it good for the upper body as well.
Free Weights- not the most feminine choice but still a great way to get stronger…. again, Marilyn did it. I suggest focusing on your own problem area. Try to build areas you think may be small, and tone areas you’d like smaller. Rumor has it, Lana Turner thought her butt was too small for her hips, so she did daily exercises to build a bigger butt. And Marilyn famously did bust exercises every day because of her fear of sagging. You can find great exercise ideas on Pinterest.

Golf- Great mind/body/focus workout and, since you’ll be surrounded by mostly men, it could be a great place to find your next leading man.
