Whole30 Week 2

I made it through week 2 of Whole30!  According to everyone I’ve talked to, the hard part should be over.  I will admit that it’s getting easier everyday.  To be completely honest, a big part of my motivation is all of you who read my updates and watch my vlogs.   Your support means the world to me!  Here’s how week 2 went…

Whole30 Week 2 - EverydayStarlet.com

The week in Facebook posts…

  • Whole30 Day 8: I angrily knocked over a display of Almond Butter because they hid the “Original” behind the “Maple” & the “Honey” and then walked away…. but I let an old lady go in front of me at the end of the aisle, so I figure my karma’s okay
  • Whole30 Day 9: It’s depressing that I’ve had to go to 3 different grocery stores this week to find enough whole, natural, healthy food to eat… if I’m going to finish Whole30 I may have to move
  • Whole30 Day 10: If at the end of this I don’t look like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley I’m gonna be pissed
  • Whole30 Day 11: Plantain chips are giving me life
  • Whole30 Day 12: I’ve eaten so many carrots I’m starting to turn a slight shade of Trump
  • Whole30 Day 13: Dear Pinterest, when I search for “SEO For Bloggers” it does not give you the right to show me “Death By Chocolate Peanut Butter Carmel Drizzle Cupcake Recipe”…. please fix the problem before the tears ruin my laptop. Kisses, Sarah
  • Whole30 Day 14: Today’s the day I’m supposed to get what the Whole30 peeps call “tiger blood”…WINNING! Hashtag Remember When We Used To Make Fun Of Charlie Sheen

Here’s my day by day vlog of Whole30 Week 2…

Here are some links to things that are helping me get through the month…

Whole30 Week 1

I can’t believe I got through a whole week of Whole30!  The adjustment has be harder in some ways than I thought, and easier in other ways.

If you’ve been following me on social media (and you should be, of course) then you know I kinda cheated, but didn’t, on Whole30 with these mock pancakes.  The ingredients are all Whole30 approved, but making them into pancakes is not “in the spirit of Whole30″… but they’re keeping me sane!

I thought I would sum up each day in a Facebook post…

  • Today is Day 1 of my Whole30 quest! That means I’m giving up sugar, dairy, grains, alcohol, and a bunch of other stuff for 30 days. This will be a stressful enough challenge already, so if everyone on social media could refrain from talking about politics, religion, tragedy, or any other controversial subjects for the next 30 days I’d really appreciate it!
  • Whole 30 Day 2: I ventured out to eat and the waiter put cheese on my salad even though I ask for it without….. I would have made a scene but I’m too tired from lack of sugar
  • Whole30 Day 3: I think food commercials are mocking me
  • Whole30 Day 4: It’s snowing… but I don’t feel bad that I forgot to pick up bread and milk, because I can’t eat it anyway
  • Whole30 Day 5: I hate everything I’m allowed to eat
  • Whole30 Day 6: Since giving up sugar I’m sleeping better than ever….unfortunately it’s at noon
  • Whole30 Day 7: I’ve been watching Total Divas for fitness motivation. It’d be nice to look like them… but I don’t know if John Cena’s physique suits my face

For a recap of my first week of Whole30, here is my vlog…

Whole30 For April

Whole30

They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

Even thought I eat relatively healthy… especially compared to the people I see in lines in front and behind me at supermarkets… I’m still not happy with my weight.  So I decided that instead of complaining, I would shake things up.  I decided to try Whole30 for the month of April.

The timing seemed perfect.  There aren’t any major holidays, and I’ve done my wedding cake tasting.

I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t want to drop some weight and look good in a wedding dress… but it truly is more about feeling good and challenging myself.

When I was in my 20s I actually entered a beauty pageant (try not to judge me).  I had just lost 50 lbs and I really just wanted to prove to myself that I could wear a bathing suit in public.  I didn’t make it past the first round, but it did give me one of my proudest memories…

When I went pageant dress shopping, I found my dream dress.  It was a complete “the one” moment.  The dress picked me!  After I purchased the dress, the saleswoman said she would pin me now and do my first fitting, and then I could come in closer to pageant day and get a final fitting.

I told her that I planned to lose another 15 lbs so I would rather wait to do a fitting.  She said it was better to do it now, and started pinning.  Not one to argue with someone with needles headed towards my flesh, I just went with it.

Several months and 15 lbs later I went back for my final fitting.  The dress was hanging off of me.

“You lost weight,” the saleswoman said confused.

“Yes, I told you I was planning to lose weight,” I said even more confused.

“I’ve been working with pageant contestants for 20 years, and every girl tells me she is going to lose weight… you are the first one to actually do it.  Most girls gain weight between fittings.”

That may have been the best I’ve ever felt about myself… or maybe not, I was delirious with hunger so I hope I didn’t hallucinate it.

I don’t necessarily want to chase the body I had in my 20s*, but I have been shaky with my willpower lately and I wanted to find that determined (albeit hungry) girl again.

*Note: That “body from my 20s” was something I had for a very short time, like age 23 and age 26.  I have always struggled.  You can hear my weight loss story here.

Here is a little more about my Whole30 plans for the month…

I’ll be keeping you updated throughout the process!

Have you done Whole30?  Do you have any favorite recipes or foods that helped get you through?

Relationships: When One Of You Works A 9-5 & The Other Is A GirlBoss

Relationships: When One Of You Works A 9-5 & The Other Is A GirlBoss

I’ll just say it… I’m not and never have been a “traditional job” kind of person.  I’ve tried it.  It’s just not me.

That said, there was a time in my life when weekends and weekdays just blended together.  Especially when I was at the peak of my stand-up comedy career.  Those were the years when weekdays were actually slow and weekends were hectic.

Now that I’m in a relationship with (and marrying) someone with a job that has more traditional hours, I have been trying to make the effort to make my hours more traditional as well.  That’s one of the benefits to blogging full time is that I work from home and I’m my own boss, so I set my hours.  That is a good thing if you’re disciplined.  It can be a bad thing when you’re not.

I never thought of myself as someone who was a workaholic… and I’ve wasted way too many hours watching bad tv to have anyone argue with me.  However, since I started blogging I’ve noticed a very direct relationship to the amount of work I put in with the progress I make.

That’s not to say I don’t wish my blog grew faster, and it’s not to say that the work/progress analogy couldn’t be made about any job really.  But I feel like with blogging I can actually SEE the difference (thank you Google Analytics).  I have to say, seeing that connection does a great job of motivating me.. but sometimes TOO much.  I’ve been finding it really difficult lately to take a break and relax. I always feel there is SOMETHING I could be doing to my blog, my youtube channel, or one of my social media outlets.

I’m very lucky to be in a relationship with someone who knows how to unwind.  It forces me to stop and shift my focus to something else.

To the bloggers, business owners, and other Girl Bosses out there, do you have the same problem?  How do you balance down time and learn how to take breaks without being constantly distracted by work.. I could use some tips!

See what Paul and I get up to on our weekends in my latest vlog….

How to Dress for a Drag Queen Competition

How to Dress for a Drag Queen Competition

I have obsessed over fashion magazines, blogs, and style guides since I was first able to read (okay, okay, they didn’t have blogs back then, but I’m trying not to feel old).  I have read tips about dressing for a beach wedding, a winter wedding, a beach Winter wedding, a business casual job in Autumn, and a formal Christmas dance in July. But I have never once read any tips for how to dress when you are a straight women asked to judge a comedy drag competition at a Rhode Island gay bar in Springtime.  Apparently that one got over looked.

So when I was presented with this fashion situation, I was on my own.  Inspired by an outfit I saw on Hello October, I decided to go for a menswear inspired look.  I figured if the men were wearing dresses, I should wear the opposite.

Between the weather and timing I didn’t get any decent OOTD photos, but you can see my whole look and highlights of the night on my vlog…..

Poor Man’s Khloe Kardashian Fitness Closet

Poor Man's Khloe Kardashian Fitness Closet Fitness Motivation

Remember when the Khloe Kardashian Fitness Closet was revealed?  It was the gasp heard ’round the world.  Women every where fantasized that if they only had this dream closet we too could be in the best shape of our lives.  Well, I’ve discovered a trick that makes that all possible!

Okay, I can’t tell you how to do a home renovation, add an extra closet, and have a huge collection of the most expensive workout gear money can by… but if you know how to do that on a poor fashion blogger’s budget then hook a sista up!

But I can tell you the trick that I did and it changed my fitness life!

I cleaned out a drawer in my bureau…. no easy feat considering my overstuffed closet (my struggle with a capsule wardrobe is another story for another day).  Then I put ALL my fitness clothing in that drawer.  That includes underwear, socks, sports bras, EVERYTHING!  The only thing I don’t put in my new fitness “closet” is my sneakers.  They don’t fit, and they need to air out between uses anyway.

Poor Man's Khloe Kardashian Fitness Closet Fitness Motivation

This move has totally been a game changer for me!  Now when I wake up, all my workout clothes are in one place, so I’m not running around the room getting socks from one place, and my sports bra from the other.  It makes getting ready to workout so much quicker.

I wanted to share this wisdom with my Starlets so we can all have celebrity bodies!

In addition to the Poor Man’s Khloe Kardashian Fitness Closet, here are my Top 5 Tips For Fitness Motivation…

How do you stay motivated to workout?

Pantone Color of The Year: Rose Quartz & Serenity Easter Tablescape

Last year I started a trend of fashion designer inspired holiday tablescapes.  My most popular was my Kate Spade Halloween, followed by my Valentino Thanksgiving, and my Chanel Christmas. This year I’m planning a wedding, so my tablescape budget is basically nonexistent.  So I decided for Easter I would just use things I already had around the house.  Since the Pantone colors of the year for 2016 are Rose Quartz & Serenity, I just knew they had to be the inspiration for my Easter Table.  They are perfect Spring colors, and I already had so much pink to choose from.

Since I didn’t buy anything new this year, I don’t know how much of this table is still available, but I highly recommend checking out Michaels, Target, and Pier 1, as well as Etsy for holiday tablescape supplies!

Wedding Planning Tips: 6 Month Update

Wedding Planning Tips

I came to the realization that my wedding is 6 months away.  I have mixed emotions about it.  On one hand, it seems like so little time to get everything done.  On the other hand, I can’t believe how much I’ve accomplished in such a short time being engaged.  While I’m certainly not a wedding expert, I wanted to give you some updates on my wedding planning and give future brides some advice about what I’ve learned so far.

First, let me give you some perspective.  Last November, when Paul and I first started seriously talking about getting engaged and planning our wedding, we figured we’d try to get married in October.  It’s really one of the few months in New England where you have any chance at all of good weather.  So we started ring shopping, and officially got engaged in December.  I’d heard so many stories of people taking 1-2 years to plan a wedding that I was afraid that we’d already cut it too close.  I feared we’d never be able to book a venue by October.  Fast forward to now, and our dream venue has been booked for August and I’m cramming 6 months worth of wedding planning into 2 months.  I’ve been basing my wedding planning on all of those wedding checklists, so here’s what I’ve done so far…

Budget

They’re not kidding when they say that you need to set a budget first before you do anything.  I will confess to being a budget virgin.  I’ve always been a shop first, ask questions later kinda Starlet.  But wedding stuff is SOOO expensive (everyone says it, but you really don’t realize HOW expensive until it’s your wedding).  I’ve had to learn how to budget really quickly, and I have a spreadsheet to prove it.

As overwhelming as it seems, I went through every single detail I thought I wanted for my wedding and estimated the cost.  This gave me a rough estimate of how much I realistically would need to spend to pull off a wedding.

I also studied every article and blog post I could find about saving money.  Some tips helped, but some were complete BS.  Here’s what I learned about wedding budgeting…

  • Not all wedding saving tips apply to all weddings.  Maybe a Friday/Sunday/Thursday wedding is less expensive in some places, at some venues, and with some vendors.  I looked into a Sunday wedding to save money, but I didn’t find a single vendor that changed their price based on day of the week. I did however get a deal on my venue by booking in their “off season”… hence the “getting married 2 months sooner than expected” phenomenon.
  • I’ve also read many places that having your wedding on a Sunday on a holiday weekend can same money.  I’m not going that route, but I did notice several vendors I researched charged extra for holiday weekends.  Just something to keep in mind.
  • You will need to prioritize.  Unless you’re an heiress, you probably can’t go overboard on every area of your wedding.  So you need to decide what is important.  For Paul and I, our priority is on things that will last forever.  We splurged on our photographer, videographer, and things like that.
  • Guest lists don’t affect the budget as much as everyone says it will.  Yes, the more people you invite the more space you need, mouths you’ll feel, and invitations you send, but that’s it.  You’re photos will cost the same, video will cost the same, a DJ/band will charge the same price for 50 guests or 100.  You may need a few less centerpieces, but don’t think cutting your guest list in half will cut your total budget in half.

I’m sure I’ll have many more budget lessons I’ll share with you along the way.

Set a Date

6 Months from now… I can hardly wait, and I’m paniced at the thought of getting eveything done in time.

Guest List

I have a spreadsheet for this too.  My guest list is quite small.  Paul has a small family, and I have a small immediate family but a very large extended family,  We decided early on that we would only invite people who had been actively involved in our lives during that last 2+ years we’d been together.

I will admit to being behind on my Save the Dates though.  The experts say that I should be mailing those out at the 6 month mark, but I haven’t picked mine out yet.  I should really get on that.

Book Your Venue

I mentioned above that we’d picked our space.  It was harder than I’d expected.  Paul and I wanted an indoor venue, someplace unique and memorable,  I think we’ve achieved both!

Plan Your Honeymoon

We’ve been back and forth on a few ideas, but no final decision yet.  I’d love to hear your favorite honeymoon/vacation spots?

Create a Wedding Website

Done, and done.  Since blogging is my life, I set mine up pretty quickly, and even bought a custom domain. I still need to fill in the details.

Start a Wedding Journal

I purchased a Smythson Wedding Journal when we first got engaged and I carry it in my purse.  To be honest, I mostly just use spiral notebooks for quick notes and spreadsheets for formal stuff. I should have saved my money on the pricey journal… but it’s so pretty!

12677298_640781202740786_556510522_n

Insure ring

I took care of that quickly… I’m way too paranoid not to. Since my ring is from Blue Nile, it was pretty easy.

Dress Shopping

I did a whole post about my dress shopping experience as well as my top dress shopping tips.

Top 5 Wedding Dress Shopping Tips

Officiant

I was lucky enough to have a close friend who is ordained to perform weddings.  He’s been hinting about the gig ever since Paul and I first got together, so this step was the easiest of the whole process.

Photographer

Luckily our officiant gave us a photographer recommendation that was amazing!   Paul and I could not be more excited to be working with Chelseadon’t miss out Old Hollywood Glamour Engagement Photo Shoot photos!

Old Hollywood Glamour Engagement Photo Shoot

Videographer

This was a struggle.  As a YouTuber, video is such a big part of my life.  So I knew I wanted a videographer.  I had a very specific vision.  After a lot of searching, I finally found a videographer that shares that vision!

Pick Your Wedding Party

I actually toyed with the idea of not having a wedding party.  But Paul has one brother, and I knew it would mean a lot to him and his family that his brother be the Best Man.  So I asked my BFF to be my Man of Honor, and a couple that Paul and I adore to be in our party as well. Actually, my entire wedding party is men.  My mother teases me that it’s because I don’t want any other women stealing my spotlight… in the words of Cher, “as if!”

Register for Gifts

We’re actually not registering for very much.  We don’t have a house yet, so buying too much home stuff like curtains or sheets seems a little ridiculous.  The one thing I did pick out was a china pattern.  For some reason, I just always felt like a formal set of dishes was the one thing I would wait to get for my wedding.

Engagement photos

Check!  You can see my engagement shoot photos and some behind the scenes footage in this blog post.

Old Hollywood Glamour Engagement Photo Shoot

Cake

It’s a big deal, but I wanted to nail down a caterer before I decided on a bakery.

Exercise routine

Luckily the weather is getting a little better so I’m been gettin’ my fitness on. I’ll be doing a fitness update soon… so stay tuned!

Florist

As much as I love flowers, they are just so expensive.  I’m looking into some non-floral decor options that I can use later for tablescapes or sell after the wedding.

Pick a Caterer and a Menu

I love food, so this one I wanted to put a lot of thought into.  I got a lot of estimates and did some tasting.  In the end I am very excited about the menu.  Paul and I designed on a menu that works with our theme but is also very “us.”  I think it’s going to be very unique and memorable!

Music

This was Paul’s biggest worry.  We decided on a DJ vs a band based on budget and the logistics of the venue space.  We both wanted to make sure we hired a DJ who didn’t think he was a comedian.  I’m a professional stand-up comedian, as is most of my wedding party, so we didn’t want someone who thought my wedding was an audition for comedy gigs. Paul was also worried that our wedding would be a techno disaster or turn into a high school dance.

The thing that surprised me was how quickly DJs get booked.  If you’re booking a DJ for your wedding, I highly recommend starting early!

Phew!  That’s a lot of stuff.  I can’t believe I’ve accomplished so much in the last 2 months.
