CambridgeSide Galleria Around the World Event

I have been so lucky lately with so many blogging/vlogging opportunities coming my way.  Some I have shared with you, like my StyleCodeLive/GenBeauty Experience, and some I will be revealing soon.  I have been back and forth about doing regular vlogging, but when fun events come up I really want to share it with my Starlets.  I recently got to go to an event at the CambridgeSide Galleria that I just had to share with you…..

CambridgeSide Galleria Around the World Event

I’ve been to one other event at the CambridgeSide Galleria before, and it was a blast.  They have so many great events for bloggers, and I wish I lived a little closer so I could go to more events.  This event was Around the World themed.  They had food, fashion, and some beauty that was inspired by different parts of the world.

Here is some of the fashion from the event….

I was lucky enough to be gifted two tickets to the Boston opening of the new musical An American in Paris… I’m thinking about vlogging that experience as well, and maybe doing a Get Ready With Me!

Is Snapchat Making Vlogging Obsolete?

Is Snapchat Making Vlogging Obsolete?

I have to admit that I’m spending more and more of my time on YouTube.  I especially love beauty related videos, but if I really like a beauty guru I will be interested in learning more about their life.  I think other people feel the same way, which is why vlogging got so popular…

Pinning is Glamorous!

Is Snapchat Making Vlogging Obsolete?

However, I find now that I follow most of my favorite YouTubers on Snapchat, that the Snapchat stories are like daily vlogs.  So I think fewer YouTubers are vlogging and choosing to just use Snapchat.

I’m curious if this is intentional, or just the way things worked out.  In reality, being a content creator is a lot of work… despite the face that we make our lives look so glamorous on Instagram.  Since there is only so much time in a day, it makes sense to Snap instead of vlog since it’s quick and in the moment.  No time consuming editing.  Plus, one could argue it’s more “real”.

However, I like a beautifully edited vlog.  I also like that it’s got some longevity.  Snapchat is so fleeting.

This all comes about at a time when I’ve cut back on my vlogging.  I just don’t know if my life is interesting enough for weekly vlogs.  However, I really enjoy doing them when I’m doing something exciting, like my trip to NYC or my Honeymoon.

Ipsy GenBeauty 2016 & StyleCodeLive

The past month has been a whirlwind.  I got married, went on my Honeymoon, and I hadn’t even unpacked when I found out I was a StyleCodeLive #SCLTalentSearch finalist.  They brought me to NYC for the weekend to appear on StyleCodeLive, took us to the Ipsy VIP Party, and then brought us to GenBeauty 2016.  I vlogged the experience and I wanted to share my crazy weekend with you, and give my review of GenBeauty and tips for finding out if it’s a convention you should consider attending….

Nominate Everyday Starlet for the Cosmopolitan Influencer Awards

I tend to be a very pessimistic person.  I don’t really know why, but I’ve been that way ever since I was little.  However it seems like lately so many amazing things have been happening that it’s hard not to catch the optimism bug.  For so long I didn’t think I would ever get married, and I just did.  The whole time I was planning my wedding I was assuming that it would turn into a huge chaotic mess, and it went smoother than I could have ever hoped.  I had never traveled outside the country before and my Honeymoon to Quebec City went better than I could have ever imagined.  Then I entered the Style Code Live Talent Search and I was selected as a finalist!

My inner optimist is starting to peak out.

Nominate Everyday Starlet for the Cosmopolitan Influencer Awards

So in the spirit of being optimistic, I wanted to ask all of my Starlets for a favor.  If you could nominate Everyday Starlet for the Cosmopolitan Influencer Awards I would be forever grateful! Honeymoon in Quebec City | A Poor Man’s Paris

When deciding on a Honeymoon location, my husband (that still feels weird to say) and I had a few criteria.  We wanted to go someplace we had never been before so we could start our marriage with an adventure… however, we’re not “adventure travelers” so we knew it should be low key.  We also agreed that it should be someplace we could drive to.  I have terrible anxiety about flying and I really didn’t need that kind of stress added to planning a wedding.   Also, after looking at all the checks we were writing for wedding vendors, we wanted someplace affordable.  Our ideal location would have been Paris, but the flying, the expense, and safety concerns had us thinking that now may not be the time for that trip.

After weighting our limited options, we decided on Quebec City.  It was a little more of a drive than we wanted, but it wasn’t unreasonable.  It was affordable, and it had a Parisian vibe.  The more research I did, the more it confirmed our decision.

Honeymoon in Quebec City | A Poor Man’s Paris

Here is a Honeymoon vlog I put together inspired by my favorite movie, Midnight in Paris…

I would describe Quebec City as what would happen if Paris and New England had a baby.  You can walk by a cute little French Bistro, and then find a Cool-As-A Moose ice cream shop right next door.  There were so many things I loved about Quebec that I thought I would share with you my hits… and a few misses….

Food

Hits

Sapristi is an Italian bistro that was just down the street from our hotel.  I think they have a few locations.  We went there our first night for dinner because we were exhausted from our drive and just wanted something quick and close by.  We were so impressed by the decor, service, food, and cocktails (and we have very high standards for cocktails) that we went back twice more that week.  Try their flatbreads, especially the 1608, and their mac & cheese… you won’t regret it.

Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, told us to go to Le Chic Shack for the best poutine.  They did not disappoint.  Although their poutine is apparently “modernized” so it’s lighter than the traditional, I found it to be AMAZING.  Any place that can feed me a bowl of potato, gravy, and cheese and not make me feel like a whale afterwards is my kinda place.  We went back once more. I had a salad, Paul had a burger, and we split some truffle fries.  They did not disappoint either!

La Chic Shack Quebec City

I found Les Trios Garcon mentioned on a travel blog that recommended the fries with Maple Rosemary dipping sauce.  I wanted to try it, but when I found out it was mayonnaise based I was hesitant.  I’ve just never liked mayo, it’s not my thing.  I tried it anyway and I was amazed.  They make their own mayo, so maybe that’s why it tasted so much better to me.  The burgers were great as well and the staff was wonderful.

We had crepes everyday.  Don’t judge, you would too.  We both agreed that Le Petit Chateau had the best crepes in town.  The fruit was fresh, and the maple syrup was served in individual glass bottles.

Le Petit Chateau Quebec City crepes

We rarely ventured outside the Old City, but I had heard so many great reviews of Tutto Gelato, that we had to take a walk and check it out.  It did not disappoint.  Best. Gelato. Ever.

Tutto Gelato Quebec City

We kept things casual for most of the trip, since we had been dressed up so much for all of our wedding stuff.  But we knew at least one night we would get dolled up for a fancy dinner and drinks.  I came across Chez Jules, and was impressed by there website and there philosophy of French Food without pretention.  It sounded perfect… and it was!  I had the Croque Monsieur which was served with a side salad, and Paul had beef that he said was the best he’d ever had.  We split a creme brûlée afterwards that was obscenely good.

Chez Jules Quebec City Chez Jules Quebec City

After our meal at Chez Jules we walked to the Frontenac hotel for cocktails.  As I mentioned earlier, we have very high standards for cocktails and they did not disappoint.  You could tell that the bartenders took cocktail mixing seriously, and treated it like an art form.

Fairmont Frontenac Cocktails, Bar Le Sam

We passed by La Maison Smith a few times and made it a point to try it before we left.  Even though I was hot from walking around, I just couldn’t leave Quebec City without a Chocolate Chaud.  And even though I’ve never met a French macaron that I didn’t like, the ones at La Maison Smith were extra special.

Misses

There are gelato places all over the city, and we tried some at Glaces Dolce Gelato that wasn’t really worth the splurge.

I heard that the pulled pork poutine at St Patrick’s Pub was good, so we decided to try it out.  The service was so-so.  We actually had to flag down a waiter because we had been seated and waited 15 min for anyone to come over and take our order or bring water.  The waiter we did find was nice and our food came quickly.  The ambiance was unique yet I feel like it was little dungeon-y.  The food tasted good, but the experience left a slightly bad taste.

La Casse Crepe Breton isn’t bad, it’s just more of an assembly line breakfast place.  We walked in and were shooed out to wait in an alcove between the restaurant and the street.  Crepes were good, but not anything special.

I’m torn about Chez Ashton.  I’m told that they make poutine the way it’s intended (in fact a waitress at La Chic Shack told us that the Ashton serves “real” poutine).  It’s basically Quebec’s McDonalds. It was also the only meal I had all week that made me feel weighed down and groggy afterwards.  It was good, and may be great for some… but I’ll take La Chick Shack any day.

Le Manoir d’Auteuil Quebec City, Affordable hotels, boutique hotels

We stayed in the Old City at a lovely boutique hotel called Le Manoir d’Auteuil.  We were shocked at how affordable it was.  It was a mansion that was converted into a hotel.  The staff was so friendly and helpful, and we were walking distance from everything we wanted to eat…I mean see… no, I mean eat.  The only downside was that we were on the 3rd floor and there is no elevator. It was for the best though because it helped us burn off the calories we were consuming.  They have a breakfast and snack menu that wasn’t extensive, but it was delicious!

I saw in a pamphlet that the hotel gave us, a picture of the fountain outside Parliament at night.  I knew we had to check it out.  I have a thing for beautiful fountains, and this one is stunning lit up at night.

You can’t visit Quebec City without taking a photo of the Most Photographed Hotel in the World, the Frontenac.  I jumped right on that bandwagon taking a photo myself.

Every time I see this I hear Adrien Brody from Midnight in Paris in my head… Dali!

How to Lose Weight with Snapchat

I will fully admit to being skeptical of Snapchat when it first got popular.  I’m still not fully sold on it… and with the new Snapchat vs Instagram Stories debate who knows which has the staying powder.  However, I have found Snapchat helpful for one thing… fitness motivation.  So I thought I would compile my tips for how to lose weight with Snapchat….

Pinning is Glamorous!

How to Lose Weight with Snapchat, Snapchat vs Instagram Stories, Fitness Motivation

How to Lose Weight with Snapchat

Post your daily workout.  Yes, you can do this on any social media, but I use each of my social media platforms differently.  Facebook is more for my personal connections.  Twitter is for connecting with brands and other influencers.  Instagram, the original, is usually a polished version of life, and I also don’t like to post on that feed too many times in a day.  However, with Snapchat you can post however and whenever you wish.  It’s just more casual and it doesn’t have to be a “perfect” pic.  So it’s the perfect place to take a quick pic of your workout outfit, your workout video, or anything that signifies that you’re gettin’ your fitness on.

The purpose of this is not really for anyone else, just for you.  I find it very motivating to put it out in the universe that I’m working out.  Sometimes people snap back that they are too, or that they’ve done the same workout, or just an encouraging comment.  Sometimes they don’t, but who cares… this motivation is for me.

Follow Inspiring Fitness People.  Again, you can do this on any social media platform (and you should), but Snapchat is much more real.  I find fitness snaps to be more relatable, and therefor more motivating.  I love following ViviannaDoesMakeup and I’ve started following Khloe Kardashian, who is already a great motivation when you see her body transformation… definitely check out her book… and I also have tips for getting Khloe’s fitness closet on a budget.

Get Sweaty with Your Snaps.  I try to make myself a deal: I can check my Snapchat stories if I’m working out while doing it.  I’m lucky enough to have access to a Stepper, so I won’t check Snapchat unless I’m on the machine breaking a sweat.  There are other exercises you could do, like a stationary bike or treadmill, or even sit ups and pushups.  It does’t matter what you do, just feel the burn… although don’t go for a walk or bike ride outside with your eyes glued to your phone, it’s dangerous in more ways than one.

Note: All of these tips can be used with Instagram Stories

Which do you like using more Snapchat or Instagram Stories? What’s your favorite fitness motivation trick?

The French Beauty Solution Review

I have a bit of a love affair with France.  I think it’s my inner Brigitte Bardot.  I devoured (pun intended) French Women Don’t Get Fat, and ever since then I’m all about learning how to live life with more Joie De Vivre.  That’s why I picked up The French Beauty Solution: Time-Tested Secrets to Look and Feel Beautiful Inside and Out by Mathilde Thomas….

Pinning is Glamorous!

The French Beauty Solution Review

The French Beauty Solution Review

The French Beauty Solution was written by the creator of Caudalie, a skin care brand you may have tried, but I’m sure have seen in Sephora.  To be honest, I was a little afraid that this book would just be a big advertisement for the skin care line.  I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t.

Yes, Mathilde does mention her brand, and some of her favorite products in her line (and who could blame her, I never hate on self promotion… BTW check out my Instagram, wink wink), but it’s never overdone.   And while I truly wasn’t looking for any new skin care products right now since I’m trying not to mess with my skin before my wedding, I definitely have some Caudalie on my wish list for after my big day.

While the main focus of this book is on skin care, there is also a lot about health and lifestyle.  I love the way Mathilde (don’t ask me how to pronounce her name, I’m hopelessly American) emphasizes how diet, stress, and other lifestyle factors can affect our beauty.  I also found the chapter on French diet to be a summarized version of French Women Don’t Get Fat… so if you’re looking for the cliff notes on that book this is it.

There is a lot of comparison throughout the book between the French way and the American way.  I really like how Mathilde seems to have a balance, and includes the things she admires about American culture instead of just having the perspective that French is better (in some ways they are, and others maybe not so much).

There is not much makeup in this book, because frankly the French don’t wear as much.  But as a skin care and general health book, this has everything.

So would I recommend this book?

If you enjoyed French Women Don’t Get Fat and/or you want to know more about the beauty regime and lifestyle of chic French women, then YES!

If you’re a “who needs skin care, I’ll just cover everything with makeup” kinda person, it may not be for you, but I’d encourage you to check it out anyway.

Have you read The French Beauty Solution?  I’d love to hear your thoughts.

If there are any makeup/beauty related books or films that you’d like me to review let me know? I’m always looking for suggestions.

How To Have A Classy Bachelorette Party

Some people only plan a wedding for the night of booze and strippers that comes along with the Bachelorette party (but hopefully not too many people.)  I’ve never been into the idea.  Maybe it’s my years as a stand-up comedian where I’ve seen too many shows destroyed by drunken bachelorettes with plastic tiaras and penis cups who thought they where funnier than the comics (they were usually just sad and annoying).  But I wanted no part of any of that.  I did like the idea of having my wedding party all get together for a night out to unwind and get to know each other before the wedding.  So when my Man of Honor, my BFF Jeff, wanted to do a Pre-Marital Sendoff I was excited about the idea.

So if you’re like me and you aren’t into a traditional bachelorette party, here are some tips for how to have a classy bachelorette party….

Pinning is Glamorous!

How To Have A Classy Bachelorette Party

How To Have A Classy Bachelorette Party

Get on the same page.  Talk to your wedding party about what you want so they don’t mistakenly think you want a lap dance filled night.  Some may be disappointed, but you’re the bride and hopefully you only have people in your wedding party who truly care about you and your feelings.

Have a co-ed night.  My wedding party is all men, so my party was a boys night out, but either way combining bachelor/bachelorette parties is becoming much more common.  Luckily my fiance feels the same way about bachelor parties as I feel about bachelorettes, so he was on board with combining them.  It made it a fun night for the whole party to get together and have people meet and get to know each other who may not be as familiar.

Think outside the bar.  Yes, going to a bar can be a great night out, but picking a venue that has some kind of entertainment or something to do can keep your party from just pounding drinks.  For my party, my MOH planned a dinner and reserved a table at a dueling piano bar.

I vlogged my non bachelor/bachelorette party, so if you’d like to see the fun times that my wedding party got up to you can check it out….

Everyday Supermodel by Molly Sims Review

I first heard about Molly Sims book Everyday Supermodel just after I started Everyday Starlet.  The names were similar and I think our concepts were too: to help everyday people feel better about themselves….

Pinning is Glamorous!

Everyday Supermodel by Molly Sims Review

Everyday Supermodel by Molly Sims Review

I’m surprised it took me so long to read this book, but I’m glad I finally did.  I didn’t know much about Molly Sims before picking up this book, other than that she was a model and she’d been on some tv shows.  So I went into this book with an open mind.

The first chapter was about food and diet.  This was by far the hardest chapter to get through.  Molly is likable, but I think she tries a little too hard to be likable at times.  I didn’t find her food insights to be anything I haven’t already heard a million times and she was a little too into detoxes for my comfort level.  I have to admit that I almost gave up on the book before I finished chapter one.

I’m glad I stuck with it.  The next chapter was all about fitness, and I found it much more interesting.

The following chapter on fashion was okay, but I don’t think Molly realizes that we don’t all have a former supermodel budget.  She had some interesting information in the skin care chapter, and her makeup tips were great basics for the makeup beginner. I also enjoyed her chapter on hair care.

The final chapter was about her life and how she got to be a successful supermodel and actress.  I don’t know if I found it as inspirational as it was meant to be, but if you’re a Molly Sims fan I’m sure you’d love it.

So would I recommend this book?

If you’re a Molly Sims fan, then you’ve probably already read it.

If you’re looking for a general lifestyle book with beginner tips on everything from food to fitness to fashion to beauty, then it could be very helpful and informative.

If you’re looking for great in-depth advice about the above topics, then I’d recommend trying some other books…

For fitness inspiration: Khloe Kardashian’s Strong Looks Better Naked

Pretty Happy by Kate Hudson Review

This time of year, when the days are longer and the sun is out more often, I seem to have the most motivation to get healthy and workout.  So that may be the reason that all the books I’ve been reading are in that theme.  Last week I reviewed Khloe Kardashian’s Strong Looks Better Naked… and this week I have a book by another California Starlet, Pretty Happy by Kate Hudson….

Pinning is Glamorous!

Pretty Happy: Healthy Ways to Love Your Body by Kate Hudson Review

Pretty Happy by Kate Hudson Review

I don’t know if this is the best strategy or not, but I tend to judge a book by how difficult it is for me to put it down.  When I love a book I’ve motivated to jump into each chapter and I feel like I want to devour the contents of the book.  I felt that way with Khloe’s book, and also with Kristin Cavallari’s book, which I also reviewed.

With Pretty Happy, not so much.

I’m not saying it’s a bad book, and I did read it quite quickly.  I’ve just read better.

I love Kate Hudson’s style.  Her looks are always a favorite of mine on the red carpets.  And there is no denying that her body in unreal.  However, something about this book was a little off-putting to me.  But what it was is a little hard to put into words.

First, I feel like Kate tried a little too hard to be a regular person in this book.  We all know she’s not.

Plus Kate, probably because of her Mom, is a little to New Age for me.  That’s doesn’t normally bother me, and it may not bother you, but it just felt like a little too much in this book.

Another thing is the pictures.  I obviously expect a book about health and fitness to have the author show off their great physique, and show beautiful lifestyle shots.  However, Kate’s photos were sexy… but not natural sexy, they looked like she was trying too hard to be sexy.  Clearly she’s confidant with her sexuality, and more powder to her.  But she’s a gorgeous woman, and she’s doesn’t need to try that hard.

All that said, I did like that Kate broke down everything she’s learned over the years about health and fitness in great detail.  I didn’t find the tips all that revolutionary, but if you are a complete novice to health then this book could be a good place to start.

I also like Kate’s take on finding a workout that works for you.  She loves pole dancing workouts because they make her feel womanly and sexy.  I tried a pole dancing class once and it was not for me (I have great rhythm and I love to dance, but put a pole in the mix and I’m a hot mess).  However, I do believe that every woman should take a bellydance class at least once in her life.  Nothing will make you appreciate your female form more!

So would I recommend this book?

If you’re a California spiritual kinda gal, or an obsessive Kate Hudson fan, then yes.

For everyone else…

If you’re feeling down, out of shape, and want to get healthy to work through stress but need the motivation, then pick up Strong Looks Better Naked by Khloe Kardashian.

If you want an everyday, down to earth, healthy lifestyle book, then pick up Balancing in Heels by Kristin Cavallari.

Have you read Pretty Happy by Kate Hudson?  I’d love to hear your thoughts.
If there are any books or films that you’d like me to review let me know? I’m always looking for suggestions.
