Audrey at Home: Memories of My Mother’s Kitchen by Luca Dotti Review

In honor of Mother’s Day, I thought it was very appropriate that the second book in my new Saturday book review series should be dedicated to a legendary mother.  While Audrey Hepburn isn’t thought of as a Mom, she most definitely was, and based on this book, a very loving and hands on mother.

Pinning is Glamorous!

Audrey at Home: Memories of My Mother's Kitchen by Luca Dotti Review

I consider myself somewhat of an expert on Old Hollywood Starlets, but this book made me realize how little I actually knew about the great and powerful Audrey.  I think she liked it that way.

Audrey at Home: Memories Of My Mother’s Kitchen was written by Audrey Hepburn’s son Luca Dotti.  Luca shares personal stories about his Mom through her favorite recipes.  It’s a recipe scrapbook of food and family memories.  It was a way for him to show the world that Audrey was not Holly Golightly from her most famous role in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

The book tells stories of Audrey as a girl surviving war and hunger, and shares details about her chocolate weakness… I’m sure many of us can relate.  She used her Hollywood earnings to settle down in a home with a garden, and lived a very unHollywood lifestyle….

“Even if we were to lose everything, we have a garden, we can grow potatoes and eat them.”- Audrey Hepburn

A woman who could live on potatoes is my kinda person!  I’m even dying to try the book’s simple recipe for potato balls… to paraphrase Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, I love finding new ways to cook potatoes.

However, as far as a cookbook, the recipes are really not the showcase of the book.  They are a way to shares stories related to family meals, but they are not groundbreaking ideas.  They are actually very typical retro European meals.

So would I recommend this book?

If you are someone who loves Old Hollywood biographies with drama and scandal, then no.

If you’re just looking for a recipe book, then probably not.

If you are an Audrey fan (who isn’t?) and you want to learn more about the star’s home life from someone who knew her better than anyone, then yes.

Have you read Audrey at Home?  I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I’m doing these reviews regularly as a Saturday series, so if there are any books or films that you’d like me to review? I’m always looking for suggestions.

Brie Bella Total Divas Inspired Makeup Look

Confession time: One of my guilty pleasures is watching Total Divas on E!.  Since Paul is also a wrestling fan, I see a lot of these ladies.

Brie Bella Total Divas Inspired Makeup Look using mostly Kat Von D Beauty vegan, cruelty free makeup for an everyday glam look

My favorite Divas are the Bella twins… and they’re obviously popular with fans because they’re getting their own spin off, Total Bellas.  Both Brie and Nikki Bella are stunning, and unbelievably in shape… so watching the show is great motivation to work out!  I’ve noticed in several episodes that Brie’s makeup is so stunning.  She frequently wears a chambray shirt, with mauve and pink, natural, yet flawless makeup.  I’ve been dying to recreate it.

Since Brie is very earth friendly, I chose to use mostly Kat Von D makeup, which is vegan and cruelty free.

Whole30 Week 4

I can’t believe I made it!  I completed Whole30!  I hoped that I could do it, but a part of me thought I would give up halfway through. Here’s how week 4 went…

Pinning is Glamorous!

Whole30 Week 4

The week in Facebook posts…

  • Whole30 Day 22: Caution.. planning a Honeymoon while on Whole30 will result in a list of restaurants you’d like to visit, but no hotel room to sleep in
  • Whole30 Day 23: I know bakeries sending me wedding dessert photos are just doing their job… but it feels cruel
  • Whole30 Day 24: I had a coconut cream pie Lara Bar that I swear was a religious experience
  • Whole30 Day 25: I had a dream last night that I went out to eat and they served me a burger. I told them I couldn’t eat it, and they told me that’s all they would give me… I ate it crying and screaming “it’s not my fault, they’re making me do it.”… The worst part? They didn’t give me any French Fries
  • Whole30 Day 26: My idea of a cheat right now would be all natural corn and sea salt tortilla chips…. what has become of me!
  • Whole30 Day 27: I’m almost out of Lara bars and it’s giving me serious anxiety
  • Whole30 Day 28: These are the LONGEST days of life!
  • Whole30 Day 29: Taking maple syrup away from a New Englander for this long is cruel and unusual punishment
  • Whole30 Day 30:  Dear Whole30, we had a good run.  But after today, we need to break up…. I don’t want to say “it’s not you, it’s me”… because let’s be real… it’s you

Here’s my day by day vlog of Whole30 Week 4…

I want to thank all of you for your support, it means more to me than you will ever know!

Also, I’ll be doing a full final recap about my experience, what I learned, what worked, what didn’t, and my results… so stay tuned!

….and in case you missed it, here’s  Week 1, Week 2, Week 3

Man Repeller: Seeking Love. Finding Overalls by Leandra Medine Review

A while ago I posted an Instagram photo from under the dryer at my hair salon while I was getting rid of any evidence of my natural hair color… no really I’m a natural blonde, wink wink.  I was reading Man Repeller: Seeking Love. Finding Overalls by famed fashion blogger Leandra Medine.  I have never had so many of my social media peeps ask me what I thought of a book before.  So after responding to countless comments, I finally decided to write a review here so I didn’t keep repeating myself.  I actually decided to start a series, here on Saturdays, where I review a book or movie that I think may be of interest to my Starlets.  Starting with the overalls lovin’ lady Leandra’s debut book.

Pinning is Glamorous!

Man Repeller: Seeking Love. Finding Overalls by Leandra Medine Review

If you follow fashion blogging at all, you know Leandra’s blog Man Repeller is of legend.  I have followed it on and off throughout the years.  Personally, I think the idea of her blog is genius.  We all know that high fashion does not always attract the opposite sex.  I’ve found myself many a time watching Sex and the City and wondering how Carrie gets the men that she does in some of her outfits… that I find fabulous mind you, but I know many men find scary.  BTW: my apologies to Leandra for making a Carrie Bradshaw reference, I know she gets tired of the comparisons to tv’s most famous fashionista and sexspert.

That said, I didn’t always find Leandra’s style choices as appealing to me.  Up until recently I was all about finding a man, and that usually meant playing it safe with fashion.  I’m finding my style evolving, and Man Repeller staples are looking more and more appealing (but my fashion evolution is another story for another blog post).

Leandra is funny, and her blog, book, and overall (pun intended) style has a great deal of humor in it.  But I feel like I need a disclaimer hear:

For those of you who don’t know my background, before blogging I spent 10 years as a stand-up comedian.  I watched, studied, and even worked with, some of the best and funniest people on the planet.  I’ve read Tina Fey’s book, Amy Poehler’s, Kathy Griffin’s, and even Lisa Lampanelli’s (her book actually made me laugh and cry).  So my standard for “funny” is very high.

I wanted to get that out of the way, because my opinion of Man Repeller is that it made me smile but didn’t make me laugh.  However, that does not mean that some of you may not completely LOL the whole way through.  I, personally, found it entertaining, but not overly funny.

I will also note that when I started reading Man Repeller I couldn’t put it down.  However, a few chapters in I lost a little interest and put it down for a while.  I finally decided that I was going to finish it, and picked it back up again.  I found the stories in the middle chapters to go on a little long (but that may be the comedian in me… always waiting for the punch line).

…And I should also note that Leandra’s life was very “New York.” So if you don’t want to hear about teen girls and designer clothes that most of us will never afford, then this may not be the book for you.   After spending a year working in the juniors’ department in a high end retail department store, I’m immune to that kind of things, but it can be a little off putting to some.  I know the first time I hear the phrase, “Coach is so high school,” I was definitely feeling a little Dorothy’s-Not-In-Kansas-Anymore.

However towards the end of the book, Leandra won me over.  The last few chapters addressed issues like how much to disclose of your personal life on your blog, which is something every blogger has to ponder at one point or another, and her wedding.

Maybe it’s because I’m planning my wedding right now, but hearing Leandra’s feelings about marriage really resonated with me.  I was also amazed that a woman who’s style I thought I had nothing in common with had planned her wedding around my favorite movie, Midnight in Paris.  Even though my wedding is Old Hollywood Glamour, it definitely inspired me to add a little Parisian flare to my big day.  One thing Leandra and I definitely have in common is our love and admiration (aka obsession) with Parisian style… although only one of us has actually been to France (hint: not me).

So would I recommend this book?  If you’re looking for the next Mindy Kaling autobiography, then probably not.  If you’re a blogger, then yes.  If you’re a fashion blogger, then hell yes.

Have you read Man Repeller, the blog or the book?  I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I’d like to start doing these reviews regularly as a series, so if there are any books or films that you’d like me to review? I’m always looking for suggestions.

The Best & Worst Full Coverage Foundations Review

This will be the final review in my foundation testing series, and I just may have saved the best for last.  I love a good full coverage foundation… something not too heavy, not too light, but juuuust right.  I was actually surprised that I didn’t have as many full coverage foundations as I thought.  Although in reality, you really only need one great one.

To keep my testing scientific and accurate, I tried to keep things consistent by using the same primer (my favorite Too Faced Primed & Poreless Pure ), and the same face powder (the Clinique Blended Face Powder ).

The Best & Worst Medium Coverage Foundations Review

If you’ve been following along with Everyday Starlet then you know I’ve been testing my makeup collection, trying on each product, and giving a review.  I went through all of my foundations and decided that I had way too many and I really needed to split up my collection into coverage.  I already shared my lightweight foundations, and now I’m reviewing my medium coverage foundations.

The Best & Worst Medium Coverage Foundations Review

To be honest, when I split up my foundations by coverage, I expected the medium coverage category to be the largest.  However, I didn’t have as many as I thought I did.

I kept tried to keep things consistent by using the same primer (my favorite Too Faced Primed & Poreless Pure , although I’m working on testing primers next), and the same face powder (my longtime favorite the Clinique Blended Face Powder ).

Here are the ones I loved and the ones I’m not crazy about.  My results may surprise you, I know they surprised me…

Whole30 Week 3

To be completely honest, when I started this Whole30 journey, I NEVER thought I would make it this far.  Of course I hoped that I would… but the pessimist in me kept creeping in.  My family and fiance have really been supportive, but I have been overwhelmed by the support and encouragement of my readers.  Your comments have really helped me power through.  Here’s how week 3 went…

Pinning is Glamorous!

Whole30 Week 3

The week in Facebook posts…

  • Whole30 Day 15: Halfway done and I’m doing great… side note: the serving size of a Lara bar is like 8 bars right?
  • Whole30 Day 16: I never thought I would say this, but I actually miss green smoothies
  • Whole30 Day 17: Paul: Do you want to go out for lunch? Me: NOOOO, if they put cheese on my salad I’ll cry
  • Whole30 Day 18: Let’s be honest… if I wasn’t allowed to have potato on Whole30 I wouldn’t have made it past Day 1
  • Whole30 Day 19: To paraphrase Monday Night Raw (which I watch now…. because fiance): Whole30 foods are like A cups, they’re real whether you like them or not.
  • Whole30 Day 20: I saw a Pizza Hut commercial and a single tear fell down my cheek
  • Whole30 Day 21: I swear a blueberry pie in the bakery section of my grocery store was mocking me

Here’s my day by day vlog of Whole30 Week 3…

Here are some links to things that are helping me get through the month…
