Man Repeller: Seeking Love. Finding Overalls by Leandra Medine Review

A while ago I posted an Instagram photo from under the dryer at my hair salon while I was getting rid of any evidence of my natural hair color… no really I’m a natural blonde, wink wink.  I was reading Man Repeller: Seeking Love. Finding Overalls by famed fashion blogger Leandra Medine.  I have never had so many of my social media peeps ask me what I thought of a book before.  So after responding to countless comments, I finally decided to write a review here so I didn’t keep repeating myself.  I actually decided to start a series, here on Saturdays, where I review a book or movie that I think may be of interest to my Starlets.  Starting with the overalls lovin’ lady Leandra’s debut book.

Pinning is Glamorous!

Man Repeller: Seeking Love. Finding Overalls by Leandra Medine Review

If you follow fashion blogging at all, you know Leandra’s blog Man Repeller is of legend.  I have followed it on and off throughout the years.  Personally, I think the idea of her blog is genius.  We all know that high fashion does not always attract the opposite sex.  I’ve found myself many a time watching Sex and the City and wondering how Carrie gets the men that she does in some of her outfits… that I find fabulous mind you, but I know many men find scary.  BTW: my apologies to Leandra for making a Carrie Bradshaw reference, I know she gets tired of the comparisons to tv’s most famous fashionista and sexspert.

That said, I didn’t always find Leandra’s style choices as appealing to me.  Up until recently I was all about finding a man, and that usually meant playing it safe with fashion.  I’m finding my style evolving, and Man Repeller staples are looking more and more appealing (but my fashion evolution is another story for another blog post).

Leandra is funny, and her blog, book, and overall (pun intended) style has a great deal of humor in it.  But I feel like I need a disclaimer hear:

For those of you who don’t know my background, before blogging I spent 10 years as a stand-up comedian.  I watched, studied, and even worked with, some of the best and funniest people on the planet.  I’ve read Tina Fey’s book, Amy Poehler’s, Kathy Griffin’s, and even Lisa Lampanelli’s (her book actually made me laugh and cry).  So my standard for “funny” is very high.

I wanted to get that out of the way, because my opinion of Man Repeller is that it made me smile but didn’t make me laugh.  However, that does not mean that some of you may not completely LOL the whole way through.  I, personally, found it entertaining, but not overly funny.

I will also note that when I started reading Man Repeller I couldn’t put it down.  However, a few chapters in I lost a little interest and put it down for a while.  I finally decided that I was going to finish it, and picked it back up again.  I found the stories in the middle chapters to go on a little long (but that may be the comedian in me… always waiting for the punch line).

…And I should also note that Leandra’s life was very “New York.” So if you don’t want to hear about teen girls and designer clothes that most of us will never afford, then this may not be the book for you.   After spending a year working in the juniors’ department in a high end retail department store, I’m immune to that kind of things, but it can be a little off putting to some.  I know the first time I hear the phrase, “Coach is so high school,” I was definitely feeling a little Dorothy’s-Not-In-Kansas-Anymore.

However towards the end of the book, Leandra won me over.  The last few chapters addressed issues like how much to disclose of your personal life on your blog, which is something every blogger has to ponder at one point or another, and her wedding.

Maybe it’s because I’m planning my wedding right now, but hearing Leandra’s feelings about marriage really resonated with me.  I was also amazed that a woman who’s style I thought I had nothing in common with had planned her wedding around my favorite movie, Midnight in Paris.  Even though my wedding is Old Hollywood Glamour, it definitely inspired me to add a little Parisian flare to my big day.  One thing Leandra and I definitely have in common is our love and admiration (aka obsession) with Parisian style… although only one of us has actually been to France (hint: not me).

So would I recommend this book?  If you’re looking for the next Mindy Kaling autobiography, then probably not.  If you’re a blogger, then yes.  If you’re a fashion blogger, then hell yes.

Have you read Man Repeller, the blog or the book?  I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I’d like to start doing these reviews regularly as a series, so if there are any books or films that you’d like me to review? I’m always looking for suggestions.

The 5 Stages of Closet Organization

Grant me the serenity to accept the wardrobe I have. Courage to change the clothes I can. And wallet to know the difference.

I think that’s how it goes, but it’s been a while since I was in Catholic school.

The 5 Stages of Closet Organization

It’s Spring time and that means Spring cleaning.  For most women (well, for me, and I’m assuming I’m not alone) cleaning out our closet is the most stressful of all Spring cleaning tasks. I know I am very much guilty of constantly having an overstuffed closet yet I never seem to have ANYTHING to wear.  I have been toying with the idea of trying the Capsule Wardrobe trend, but I’ve yet to take the leap.  But no matter what I decide, I know I need to do some serious organizing.  So thought I would share with you my process…

The 5 Stages of Closet Organization

Denial

(Panic voice) “I have NOTHING to wear!!!!!!!!”

Anger

(Angry voice) “I have NOTHING to wear!!!!!!!!”

“I hate everything!”

“How dare they make this clothing so I could see it in the store and buy it!”

“It’s the designer’s/manufacturer’s/brand’s/store’s/my mother’s fault!!!!”

Bargaining

(Looking to the heavens) “Lord, if I give all my crappy…err, I mean, I selflessly give all my wonderful clothes to the needy and less fashionable, then can I have a brand new fabulous wardrobe.  It’s only fair!”

Depression

(Crying)………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………(more crying)

Acceptance

Who am I kidding?  I usually replace “Acceptance” with “More Crying”.

If you’ve come to acceptance with your wardrobe, or if you’ve successfully mastered the Capsule Wardrobe and lived to tell, I’d love some tips!

The Oscars Red Carpet is My Super Bowl

We’ve all probably heard the phrase, “the Oscars are the Super Bowl of Fashion.”  But this Starlet, takes that to heart.  Some people may spend the whole day (or even days or weeks) prepping/pre-gaming/obsessing over the footballs teams competing in the biggest night of sports.  But I do that for the Academy Awards!

I need my essentials…

I’ll be totally honest… I’m much less into the actual awards show than the red carpet… because that’s where the glamour is!

Here’s how I get ready for fashion’s biggest night, the Oscars Red Carpet…

It’s no secret at Burlesque Icon and Glamour Queen Dita Von Teese is one of my style icons.  I’ve read all of her books, and I read every article I can find about her.  So I was so excited that she teamed up with Mode to create this video about her signature style and her lingerie line…

I really wish I could try her bras, but alas, they do not come in my size.  But she does have a wide size range, so if you’ve tried her line I’d love to hear what you think of it!

If you want to try out Ms. Von Teese’s lingerie, you can finds it at Bare Necessities

Top 5 Wedding Dress Shopping Tips

Top 5 Wedding Dress Shopping Tips

Wedding dress shopping can be one of the most exciting and stressful things a Starlet will ever do.  Many Starlets have been dreaming of their bridal gown ever since they were a little girl.  You want to look classic but not boring, sexy but not trashy, unique but not tacky, and drop dead gorgeous but not like you’re trying too hard.  That’s a lot to ask of one dress!

I recently said yes to my wedding dress, and I wanted to share my top tips that I learned in the process….

Here Are My Top 5 Wedding Dress Shopping Tips….

Size matters

I don’t mean THAT… I mean the size of the group you bring.  Apparently those large groups entourages with yes/no paddles to vote on the dress are not just found on Say Yes To The Dress.  Apparently it happens everywhere, and the sales women all told me how difficult they find it for the store and the bride.  Dress shopping is overwhelming enough, you don’t need a pile of opinions that all conflict.

That said, I don’t think it’s something to do alone.  As an only child, I would have never thought of bringing anyone other than my Mom.  However, if that isn’t the right option for you then a sister, or close friend who’s opinion you trust is a great option and is on your side.  Whoever it is, make sure you talk ahead of time about what you really want for your dress and your wedding.  That way they can remind you of your vision when you fall in love with a cupcake dress and what you really wanted was a flowy beachy gown.

Try on everything

You may have dreamed of a princess dress ever since you saw your first Disney movie, but you may fall in love with a sexy mermaid dress (after all Ariel is a Disney princess too).  I’m not saying you should throw away your vision, but keep an open mind.  I’m also not saying try on everything in the store, but try on a few different shapes and fabrics. I even tried on a ballgown which I never thought I would like… I absolutely love the top, but the full skirt was just not for me.

Top 5 Wedding Dress Shopping Tips
None of these are MY DRESS, I want it to be a surprise!

The first dress shop I went to had very few dresses that fit my vision, but I tried on a few and learned something new with each dress I tried on.

The second dress shop I went to had a few more dresses that fit my vision, but after trying on what felt like a million dresses, none of them had my heart.  When I was emotionally drained and ready to give up, another sales girl mentioned that they had just received a new shipment of dresses that hadn’t even made it to the floor yet. She’s been dying to see them on a bride and she thought one may be my style.  I was exhausted and hesitant, but I was already there so I figured why not.  One of those dresses ended up being my dress.  So you never know… when in doubt, try it on.

Keep it real

We’re all real people, with real bodies.  We’re all beautiful but in our own unique way.  I don’t always actually feel that way about myself, but that’s the mantra you need to repeat to yourself when dress shopping.  Clothes shopping in general can do a number on your ego, and wedding dress shopping is that times a million.  Here are a few things to keep in mind in regards to wedding dresses and body image…

  • Wedding dress sizes are not regular dress sizes.  You will have to size up possibly 2-4 sizes.  Don’t let that get to you, it’s what we all have to do.
  • Know your body type and your best features.  I had Pinned a bunch of slinky sheath dresses, but deep down I knew they wouldn’t work on me.  I also had to rule out a few dresses I loved from the front because the back was just too low for my comfort zone.  That’s okay, because I found a dress that, as my grandmother used to say, accentuates the positive.  I’d say focus on the feeling that you want the dress to have (Glamorous, Modern, Traditional, Romantic, etc) but find it in a shape that flatters your body.
  • Do your hair and makeup.  You don’t necessarily have to go all out like you will on your wedding day, but you’ll feel more polished and feel better about staring at yourself in a mirror for hours.
  • If the dress doesn’t make you feel beautiful, move on.  It’s your day, and you should feel like the Starlet that you truly are!

You may not cry…

…and that’s okay.  Even if you’re a crier like me, you may not well up in your dress.  I didn’t and I couldn’t figure out why.  I thought I was supposed to.  Here’s a few reasons I think I didn’t…

  • I tend to cry when I’m frustrated, overwhelmed, tired, stresses, hungry, and plenty of other times.  I don’t tend to cry when I’m happy.  I don’t know if I’ll cry at my wedding, possibly, but I didn’t cry when P proposed.  Maybe I wasn’t meant to be a wedding dress crier.
  • While the sales women were very helpful, they were still sales people.  The lawyer’s daughter in me tends to get very poker faced around sales people so as not to reveal my attachment to something and have the price go up.
  • I almost cried earlier in the appointment because I was frustrated, overwhelmed, tired, stresses, hungry, etc.

Either way, I’m confident I found the right dress even without the water works. And on that note…

You’ll know when you found the one

You probably knew when you found your mate, and you will know when you’ve found your dress.  Whether it be tears, a smile, or some other type of reaction, you will not actually pick your dress, it will pick you.  There will be a moment in YOUR dress that you’ll fall in love and realize it’s the one.  For me, it was when I had my dress on and they pinned the back to give it a mermaid shape that curved to my hip.  I felt myself light up.

I didn’t jump right away though.  I went home and slept on it.  I flipped through my photos of myself in the dresses and realized that some of the dresses I liked were not great in photos.  Granted they were just quick selfies I took in the store, but I’m sure not all the photos at your wedding will be professional.  There are bound to be some crappy phone photos that pop up on social media, and you want to make sure you’ll look fabulous in all of them!

While flipping though my pics I realized that one dress stood out well beyond all the others.  I just knew…and you will too.

Bonus tip about budget

You can find a great dress at any price.  My dress was actually under budget, but I feel like it looks more expensive.  Look for fabrics and details that look high end.  Plus YOUR dress will make you look like a million bucks regardless of how much you spent.

If you want to see some wedding dress shopping commentary, you can check out my vlog…

How To Buy a Diamond Engagement Ring… or any Diamond Jewelry

How To Buy a Diamond Engagement Ring... or any Diamond Jewelry - EverydayStarlet.com @SarahBlodgett

Diamonds are a girls best friend… but they can be a wallet’s worst nightmare.  Shopping for diamonds, whether it be for yourself for someone else, whether it be an diamond engagement ring, earrings, a necklace, or something else, can be very overwhelming.  I was lucky enough to get the chance to shop for my engagement ring with my fiance.  It was something I really wanted us to do together, and he was totally on board.  Some people may want to be surprised and think shopping together kills the romance… I say there is nothing more romantic than jewelry shopping.

I knew that diamonds were expensive, so I did a TON of research to make sure my fiance got the most for his money.  I’ve compiled all of that research into one video.

If you’re shopping for diamonds for any occasion, jewelry setting, or person, here are all of my tips to get the most for your money….

What’s Your Workout Style?

How to Stay Health Through the Holidays: Health, Food, & Fitness Tips

It’s always been my belief that when you look good, you feel good.  I don’t mean that you look good to other people, but that you look good to yourself (you’re the one that matters, right!?).

A huge part of looking and feeling good is exercise.  With such busy lives, it can be so easy to skip your workouts.   When I need a boost of motivation, I get myself a new fitness outfit.  If I have to sweat, I might as well look cute doing it.  Typically, I get so excited about wearing my new fashionable workout clothes, I can then translate that momentum into a workout.

It’s not a new idea.  Women have been stylin’ in workout wear from years.  That’s why I was so excited to see this video showing women’s workout style over the years.  It’s also fun to see they different types of workouts, and equipment that were popular in each decade!

Check out this video from Mode Media taking a look at 100 Years of Workout Style…

Tuxedo Look for Less: Channeling Kourtney Kardashian Channeling Marlene Dietrich

Tuxedo Look for Less: Channeling Kourtney Kardashian Channeling Marlene Dietrich - EverydayStarlet.com @SarahBlodgett

I’m definitely a girly girl.  I don’t play sports, I don’t like to get dirty, and I love a fancy dress.  However, I’ve been taking a lot more fashion risks lately and I’ve never been happier.  Looking back on my life, I’ve realized that every time I’ve played it safe with fashion I’ve always regretted it.  That’s why I’ve been turning to fashion rebels for inspiration.

As far as Old Hollywood style rebels go, you can’t get any better than Marlene Dietrich.  She is the Goddess of Menswear Fashion Glamour.  So when I saw photos recently of Kris Jenner’s Gatsby Themed Birthday party, I was so excited that Kourtney Kardashian channeled Ms. Dietrich and went with a sexy suit.

Don’t get me wrong, the other Kardashians looked stunning in their sparkly evening gowns (say what you want about the Kardashians, but the ladies know how to do luxury).  But Kourtney’s look, as simple as it was, was such a showstopper for me! I love how Kourtney tales risks with fashion.  When her family does a “theme”, she joins in but always does her own twist.

I went on a quest to recreate her look for the holiday season.  I wanted it to be affordable, and with my body type it was a challenge (blazers and boobs can be best friends or mortal frenemies).  I ended up ordering the pants and the blazer from two different brands.  I was pleasantly surprised that the fabrics went so well together.

DIY Embellished Boyfriend Jeans… the Easiest DIY Ever!

DIY Embellished Boyfriend Jeans... the Easiest DIY Ever! - EverydayStarlet.com @SarahBlodgett

With the Holiday Season upon us, sparkle is everywhere!  As a Starlet, I could not be happier!  I would add sparkle to just about anything.  So I was excited to see it even showing up on denim.

I’ve been seeing embellished boyfriend jeans popping up in fashion magazines.  They’re a great holiday option for a night out or a holiday party where you want to be casual yet still festive.  However, embellished denim can be expensive.

I’ve come up with the absolute easiest DIY ever.  I took some brooches (also a big trend right now) and pinned them on my boyfriend jeans.  This way you can control where you want the embellishment, and you can change up the same jeans to look brand new every night of the week (but don’t forget to do laundry eventually).

You can get this look with any brooches, just make sure they are secure so you don’t loose them, or worse, stab yourself.  Check your favorite stores for brooches, or find some vintage ones on Etsy.
