Charlotte Tilbury Film Star Dupe | L’Oreal Infallible Pro Contour Palette Review

Sometimes drugstore dupes just jump out and slap you in the face.  But others sneak up on you when you least expect it.  That’s exactly how I felt when I discovered a possible Charlotte Tilbury Film Star Dupe….

Pinning is Glamorous!

Charlotte Tilbury Film Star Dupe | L'Oreal Infallible Pro Contour Palette Review

When the Charlotte Tilbury Film Star Bronze & Glow palette came out the hype was off the charts… and I jumped right on the contoured bandwagon.  I really do like the palette, but I’m not in love.  I think the name and the packaging may be my favorite things about it.  The sculpt is more of a bronzer, and the highlighter is pretty, but not necessarily BAM.  I wanted to fall for it, but we have remained just friends.

Then I started hearing about the L’Oreal Infallible Pro Contour Palette, and I decided to jump on that discounted bandwagon.  When I got it home I noticed that the shades looked similar to the Film Star.  I knew I needed to investigate.

So is the L’Oreal a drugstore dupe for the Charlotte Tilbury?  Check out my side by side makeup battle to find out…

Have you used either of these palettes? Do you have a favorite contour palette?

Note:  I filmed this right before my first attempt at false lashes video, and the whole time I was editing that video I couldn’t stop staring at the Pro Contour highlight side of my face… totally BAM!

My First Time Applying False Lashes | An Epic Fail

Even the most experienced makeup lover has obstacles to overcome.  For some it’s mastering the perfect cat eye, for some it’s a contoured cheekbone… for me, it’s false lashes…..

Pinning is Glamorous!

My First Time Applying False Lashes | An Epic Fail

I don’t know why, but my whole makeup wearing life I’ve just never been able to apply falsies.  It’s not just my skill.. it may be my face.  I’ve had professional makeup artists try to apply them to me and they usually end up a mess.

With my wedding quickly approaching (OMG only 2 more months… I’m panicking so I’ll try not to think about it too much… great now I’m freaking out… I’m going to my happy place… I’m at my makeup table… just breath… okay back to lashes), I decided this was the ultimate time to finally defeat my nemesis.

So did I finally master falsies?  Watch and find out….

The Art of Makeup by Kevyn Aucoin Review

I’ve been obsessed with makeup since I was a little Starlet.  I’ve always seen it as a beautiful artistic outlet.  So when I was in high school and I stumbled across The Art of Makeup by Kevyn Aucoin, I knew I needed it in my life….

Pinning is Glamorous!

The Art of Makeup by Kevyn Aucoin Review

The Art of Makeup by Kevyn Aucoin Review

At the time, I had no idea who Kevyn Aucoin was, but when I opened the pages of The Art of Makeup I knew I had to know more.  I devoured this book.  Like Carrie Bradshaw once famously said about buying Vogue instead of dinner, “I found it feed me more.”… side note, I believe that was the Sex and the City episode where Kevyn Aucoin made a cameo.

The Art of Makeup was Kevyn’s first book.  I have all of them, and I’ll be reviewing each, but I wanted to start at the beginning with his first.

First of all, this book only comes in paperback, which can be a bummer for some hard core collectors.  It’s the size of a coffee table book, with gorgeous images to boot, but I know some would prefer decorative books in hard cover.

This book gives an glimpse into the mind of a legendary makeup artist who was gone too soon.  It’s more like a brief intro than a full on biography.

This goes for the makeup as well.  Each type of makeup has a chance to shine, but there is no in depth information… just amazing images.

We also get a few makeup application tips, some makeup looks by era, and a quick glimpse at Kevyn’s legendary makeovers.  But nothing to involved.

Then comes the portraits.  These are pure inspiration.  Its a collection of famous faces that Kevyn has made up.  I can’t tell you how many times I tried to recreate the look he gave Naomi Campbell, which is Bombshell all the way.

The Art of Makeup by Kevyn Aucoin Review, Naomi Campbell

This book is was inspirational to me in so many ways.  However, it’s not his best book.  The two books that followed were much more detailed and informative.  I think of this book as the appetizer to his 3 course meal of makeup inspiration.

So would I recommend this book?

If you’re a makeup junkie like me, or you’re into 90s supermodels and style, and you can get your hands on a copy, then HELL YES!

If you’re looking for more of a book of makeup tutorials, then I’d look for Kevyn’s other books…which I’ll be reviewing soon, so stay tuned.

Have you read The Art of Makeup by Kevyn Aucoin?  I’d love to hear your thoughts.

If there are any makeup/beauty related books or films that you’d like me to review let me know? I’m always looking for suggestions.

…and speaking of gorgeous models, here’s a video from Mode Media with tips for model off duty hair…

Battle of the Lash Primers Review

I’ve been slowing organizing my makeup collection.  When I come across a makeup product that I only have two of (which is rare since I have a ridiculous collection), I like to challenge them to a duel and battle them side by side.  So when I discovered my Tarte Opening Act Lash Primer and my Lancome CILS Booster XL Super Enhancing Mascara Base I knew I had to do a lash primer review….

Battle of the Lash Primers Review

I’ve been testing mascaras for a while now (stay tuned for an epic mascara review coming soon), but I realized I only had the two lash primers… and that I rarely ever used them.

So I decided to battle them out, one on each eye along with my favorite mascara, the Clarins Truly Waterproof Mascara, and see which one (if any) is worth the extra makeup step.

Frank Coffee Body Scrub Review

Summer is finally here, and that means showing more skin.  Translate that to mean more self tanning, more moisturizers, and definitely more exfoliating.  I’ve been on a search for a great body scrub for a while.  So when I started hearing all the hype about Frank Coffee Body Scrub, I had to check it out for myself…..

Pinning is Glamorous!

Frank Coffee Body Scrub Review

Frank Coffee Body Scrub Review

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with this scrub, so I thought I would break down it’s pros and cons…

Cons

  • It’s a little hard to get your hands on.  It’s not impossible.  I ordered mine on Amazon, but I’m always hesitant to try a product that I can’t find at a major retailer like Sephora or Ulta.  That may just be my personal preference.
  • You don’t get a lot for your money.  It’s not crazy expensive, but since it’s a full body product you will go through it quickly.  And on that note, I know some people claim you could just DIY a similar scrub, but I personally don’t have the time or patience for that.
  • That packaging…. I really hate the packaging.  It’s terrible.  It’s a bath product that you use in the shower, and it’s in a paper bag.  I will admit that mine has held up quite well so far, but I am planning to decant mine into a Mason jar to make it more water friendly.
  • It’s messy.  The first time I used it I was so scared that it was going to stain everything in my bathroom….. although it didn’t, and my towels are as good as new after a wash.  I did have a hard time getting all the coffee granules rinsed out of the shower.  It’s not impossible, but it’s a little inconvenient.
  • Another personal preference, but this is oil based.  I’ve always hated body scrubs that left an oil on the skin.  I know a lot of people love that… probably those with dry skin… but for me it’s not my thing.  I will say that the oil is much lighter than any other oil based body scrub I’ve ever tried, so it feels the nicest on my skin.  However, be careful about any oil residue in the shower to avoid accidents.

Pros

  • The smell is heavenly.  If you like the scent of coffee at all you’ll be obsessed with this.
  • The granules are effective but not painful.
  • Coffee is supposed to be great for your skin,  There are claims that it helps with cellulite, and with tightening skin.  I’m not sure if it’s made a big difference in that area, but I know I can use all the help I can get.
  • You’re skin will never be smoother.  I used this the first time and was skeptical because of all the reasons I listed in the Cons.  I used the scrub, then shaved my legs, then used a body wash (because, like I said, I hate that oil residue), and then used my usual body butter.  I didn’t think much of it until later that night when I realized that my legs were the smoothest they’ve ever been.  I couldn’t believe how close a shave I had.  It was that feeling that made me try this again, and I’ve even purchased more.

As far as I’m concerned, smooth skin is always worth it!

Have you tried Frank Coffee Body Scrub?  Do you have a favorite body scrub for Summer?

Drugstore Dupe? Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips vs Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick Review

You can’t have a drugstore dupe conversation without hearing about the Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips vs the Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick.  They look similar, and the names are almost identical.  Yet I rarely see any evidence of this dupe-dom (yes I made up my own word)….

Contour Powder for Fair Skin | Drugstore vs High End

I don’t know how I lived before contouring.  I know I did, but lately it’s become a bit of an obsession.  However, it can be tricky for us pale Starlets to find a contour powder for fair skin that makes it look like we have a naturally sculpted face….

Contour Powder for Fair Skin, Drugstore vs High End, NYX HD Blush in Taupe, Kevyn Aucoin Sculpting Powder in Light, review

I mostly use contour kits…. and I’ve even gotten into cream contour.  However, I rarely ever use a solo contour shade.  I’ve had the NYX HD Blush in Taupe in my makeup collection for a while.  It’s supposed to be the ultimate contour shade for fair skin.  I also picked up the new light shade of the Kevyn Aucoin Sculpting Powder because I’ve heard such great reviews.

Even thought these are clearly not dupes, I wanted to see how they compared. The results actually surprised me…

Pretty Happy by Kate Hudson Review

This time of year, when the days are longer and the sun is out more often, I seem to have the most motivation to get healthy and workout.  So that may be the reason that all the books I’ve been reading are in that theme.  Last week I reviewed Khloe Kardashian’s Strong Looks Better Naked… and this week I have a book by another California Starlet, Pretty Happy by Kate Hudson….

Pinning is Glamorous!

Pretty Happy: Healthy Ways to Love Your Body by Kate Hudson Review

Pretty Happy by Kate Hudson Review

I don’t know if this is the best strategy or not, but I tend to judge a book by how difficult it is for me to put it down.  When I love a book I’ve motivated to jump into each chapter and I feel like I want to devour the contents of the book.  I felt that way with Khloe’s book, and also with Kristin Cavallari’s book, which I also reviewed.

With Pretty Happy, not so much.

I’m not saying it’s a bad book, and I did read it quite quickly.  I’ve just read better.

I love Kate Hudson’s style.  Her looks are always a favorite of mine on the red carpets.  And there is no denying that her body in unreal.  However, something about this book was a little off-putting to me.  But what it was is a little hard to put into words.

First, I feel like Kate tried a little too hard to be a regular person in this book.  We all know she’s not.

Plus Kate, probably because of her Mom, is a little to New Age for me.  That’s doesn’t normally bother me, and it may not bother you, but it just felt like a little too much in this book.

Another thing is the pictures.  I obviously expect a book about health and fitness to have the author show off their great physique, and show beautiful lifestyle shots.  However, Kate’s photos were sexy… but not natural sexy, they looked like she was trying too hard to be sexy.  Clearly she’s confidant with her sexuality, and more powder to her.  But she’s a gorgeous woman, and she’s doesn’t need to try that hard.

All that said, I did like that Kate broke down everything she’s learned over the years about health and fitness in great detail.  I didn’t find the tips all that revolutionary, but if you are a complete novice to health then this book could be a good place to start.

I also like Kate’s take on finding a workout that works for you.  She loves pole dancing workouts because they make her feel womanly and sexy.  I tried a pole dancing class once and it was not for me (I have great rhythm and I love to dance, but put a pole in the mix and I’m a hot mess).  However, I do believe that every woman should take a bellydance class at least once in her life.  Nothing will make you appreciate your female form more!

So would I recommend this book?

If you’re a California spiritual kinda gal, or an obsessive Kate Hudson fan, then yes.

For everyone else…

If you’re feeling down, out of shape, and want to get healthy to work through stress but need the motivation, then pick up Strong Looks Better Naked by Khloe Kardashian.

If you want an everyday, down to earth, healthy lifestyle book, then pick up Balancing in Heels by Kristin Cavallari.

Have you read Pretty Happy by Kate Hudson?  I’d love to hear your thoughts.
If there are any books or films that you’d like me to review let me know? I’m always looking for suggestions.

Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Exposed Dupe | Milani Blush in Romantic Rose Review

As I mentioned in my recent epic blush review, I’m not much of a blush girl.  I like it, I just don’t LIVE for it.  I don’t think I had actually fallen in love with a blush before… that is until I found Exposed from tarte.  It’s a soft neutral shade made in blush heaven.  So you can imagine my skepticism when I heard that there was a Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Exposed dupe at the drugstore.  I had to investigate…
