Advanced Style The Movie Review

Confession time: If something is a movie and a book, I always like the one I experience first the best.  I don’t really know why, but I’ve learned to accept that about myself.  So I was hesitant about watching the documentary over the counter viagra Advanced Style after reading the book.

Pinning is Glamorous!

Advanced Style The Movie Review

buy cheap sildenafil citrate online canadian pharmacy Advanced Style started out as a blog created by Ari Seth Cohen.  Ari is a street style photographer in New York City, and his blog usually features women 60+.  Many are in their 90s.  Gives new meaning to the phrase, the 90s are coming back.

The styles of the women featured range from upscale fabulous, to artsy glam.  However, one thing these women all have in common, is a dedication to their own personal style.

I had heard about the blog, but I hadn’t started following it when I found out it was becoming a book.  I didn’t decide to pick up the book until I heard that tadalafil without a doctor prescription one of my style icons, Dita Von Teese, was doing the Afterword.

After reading Advanced Style the book (I use the word reading loosely, because it’s mostly about the amazing photography), I found myself in a complete state of inspiration.  The women featured were just so passionate about life and style that it felt like taking a shot of Vitamin Chic.

After a euphoric experience like that, how could a movie ever compete?  I would soon have my answer, because Advanced Style then became a documentary.

In Advanced Style The Movie, we get to know several of the women featured prominently on the blog and in the book.  It’s very hard not to fall in love with these ladies.

While I still find these women inspiring, I didn’t find the movie as inspirational as the book. The book felt all positive, while the movie was much more “real”.

While the book was full of inspiring quotes and images, the movie was a reminder that life can be hard out there for a woman.  Some were in relationships, but many felt like the women that the Sex and the City cast fear they would grow up to be, stylish but alone.  It was also, a reminder that a group of women at any age will get competitive with each other… a trait I keep hoping women outgrow.  We are also reminded that death is reality we must all deal with… although there is a positive spin on the tragedy we experience in the documentary.

Overall, I unfortunately have become one of those people who sees a movie and snobbishly says, “I like the book better.”

So would I recommend this film?

If you love the book and the blog, then you’ve probably already seen it.

If you’re a fashion blogger and/or fashion lover, then yes.

If you’re looking for a shot of inspiration, then I’d read the book instead.

Have you seen Advanced Style, or read the blog and/or the book?  I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I’m doing these reviews regularly as a Saturday series, so if there are any books or films that you’d like me to review? I’m always looking for suggestions.

Contour Palettes Review | Maybelline FaceStudio Master Contour vs Tarte Park Ave Princess

While sorting though my obscenely large makeup collection (I’m a beauty blogger… that’s how I justify it), I sometimes come across things that look similar or remind me of each other.  There not necessarily dupes, but they are comparable.  So after comparing the mothers’ of all contour palettes Anastasia Beverly Hills vs Kat Von D, I decided to put some other contour palettes to the test against each other.

This time I’m trying the Maybelline FaceStudio Master Contour, a new drugstore contour palette, and having it battle side by side with an classic palette, the Tarte Park Ave Princess.  Here’s how it went down…

Mac Strobe Cream Dupe? The Body Shop Radiant Highlighter for Strobing

Here are Everyday Starlet we’re always on the quest for dupes.  So when I was organizing my makeup I happened to come across my Radiant Highlighter from The Body Shop.  I have used it for strobing before (is strobing still a thing, or is it over like fleek?)… so I got to thinking, could it be a MAC Strobe Cream Dupe?

I had never actually used my MAC Strobe Cream before.  It was so hyped up that I purchased it in a MAC haul and then forgot about it.

If you actually compare the swatches, they’re not exactly the same. However, they both have a pink, cool toned glow.

So I thought I would try them both as strobe creams side by side to see how the compare.  Here’s what I discovered….

Note: When I filmed this, I was looking at myself in the mirror and in natural light and I liked the Radiant Highlighter better.  However, in the photo, the MAC side looks smoother.

The Best Primers For Sensitive Skin

I’ve had a love/hate relationship with primers over the years.  On the one hand, I love how smooth they make my skin, how much easier they make foundation application, and how long lasting they can make my makeup.  On the other hand, many of them make my skin red and irritated… and some even make my skin… gasp… break out.

Face Lift At Home? Dermarche Labs Roloxin Lift Mask Review

When I was younger I used to hate my full face.  However now that I’m older I appreciate that it has helped keep me looking young.  That’s not to say I’m old, but I’m definitely getting to the age where I’m aware of wrinkles.  So when I heard that there was a face mask that could give you a more lifted face at home, I ran to Sephora… well I ran to my laptop and went to Sephora online… to get me some a that!

Audrey at Home: Memories of My Mother’s Kitchen by Luca Dotti Review

In honor of Mother’s Day, I thought it was very appropriate that the second book in my new Saturday book review series should be dedicated to a legendary mother.  While Audrey Hepburn isn’t thought of as a Mom, she most definitely was, and based on this book, a very loving and hands on mother.

Pinning is Glamorous!

Audrey at Home: Memories of My Mother's Kitchen by Luca Dotti Review

I consider myself somewhat of an expert on Old Hollywood Starlets, but this book made me realize how little I actually knew about the great and powerful Audrey.  I think she liked it that way.

Audrey at Home: Memories Of My Mother’s Kitchen was written by Audrey Hepburn’s son Luca Dotti.  Luca shares personal stories about his Mom through her favorite recipes.  It’s a recipe scrapbook of food and family memories.  It was a way for him to show the world that Audrey was not Holly Golightly from her most famous role in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

The book tells stories of Audrey as a girl surviving war and hunger, and shares details about her chocolate weakness… I’m sure many of us can relate.  She used her Hollywood earnings to settle down in a home with a garden, and lived a very unHollywood lifestyle….

“Even if we were to lose everything, we have a garden, we can grow potatoes and eat them.”- Audrey Hepburn

A woman who could live on potatoes is my kinda person!  I’m even dying to try the book’s simple recipe for potato balls… to paraphrase Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, I love finding new ways to cook potatoes.

However, as far as a cookbook, the recipes are really not the showcase of the book.  They are a way to shares stories related to family meals, but they are not groundbreaking ideas.  They are actually very typical retro European meals.

So would I recommend this book?

If you are someone who loves Old Hollywood biographies with drama and scandal, then no.

If you’re just looking for a recipe book, then probably not.

If you are an Audrey fan (who isn’t?) and you want to learn more about the star’s home life from someone who knew her better than anyone, then yes.

Have you read Audrey at Home?  I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I’m doing these reviews regularly as a Saturday series, so if there are any books or films that you’d like me to review? I’m always looking for suggestions.

Brie Bella Total Divas Inspired Makeup Look

Confession time: One of my guilty pleasures is watching Total Divas on E!.  Since Paul is also a wrestling fan, I see a lot of these ladies.

My favorite Divas are the Bella twins… and they’re obviously popular with fans because they’re getting their own spin off, Total Bellas.  Both Brie and Nikki Bella are stunning, and unbelievably in shape… so watching the show is great motivation to work out!  I’ve noticed in several episodes that Brie’s makeup is so stunning.  She frequently wears a chambray shirt, with mauve and pink, natural, yet flawless makeup.  I’ve been dying to recreate it.

Since Brie is very earth friendly, I chose to use mostly Kat Von D makeup, which is vegan and cruelty free.

Whole30 Week 4

I can’t believe I made it!  I completed Whole30!  I hoped that I could do it, but a part of me thought I would give up halfway through. Here’s how week 4 went…

Pinning is Glamorous!

Whole30 Week 4

The week in Facebook posts…

  • Whole30 Day 22: Caution.. planning a Honeymoon while on Whole30 will result in a list of restaurants you’d like to visit, but no hotel room to sleep in
  • Whole30 Day 23: I know bakeries sending me wedding dessert photos are just doing their job… but it feels cruel
  • Whole30 Day 24: I had a coconut cream pie Lara Bar that I swear was a religious experience
  • Whole30 Day 25: I had a dream last night that I went out to eat and they served me a burger. I told them I couldn’t eat it, and they told me that’s all they would give me… I ate it crying and screaming “it’s not my fault, they’re making me do it.”… The worst part? They didn’t give me any French Fries
  • Whole30 Day 26: My idea of a cheat right now would be all natural corn and sea salt tortilla chips…. what has become of me!
  • Whole30 Day 27: I’m almost out of Lara bars and it’s giving me serious anxiety
  • Whole30 Day 28: These are the LONGEST days of life!
  • Whole30 Day 29: Taking maple syrup away from a New Englander for this long is cruel and unusual punishment
  • Whole30 Day 30:  Dear Whole30, we had a good run.  But after today, we need to break up…. I don’t want to say “it’s not you, it’s me”… because let’s be real… it’s you

Here’s my day by day vlog of Whole30 Week 4…

I want to thank all of you for your support, it means more to me than you will ever know!

Also, I’ll be doing a full final recap about my experience, what I learned, what worked, what didn’t, and my results… so stay tuned!

….and in case you missed it, here’s  Week 1, Week 2, Week 3
