Tuxedo Look for Less: Channeling Kourtney Kardashian Channeling Marlene Dietrich

Tuxedo Look for Less: Channeling Kourtney Kardashian Channeling Marlene Dietrich - EverydayStarlet.com @SarahBlodgett

I’m definitely a girly girl.  I don’t play sports, I don’t like to get dirty, and I love a fancy dress.  However, I’ve been taking a lot more fashion risks lately and I’ve never been happier.  Looking back on my life, I’ve realized that every time I’ve played it safe with fashion I’ve always regretted it.  That’s why I’ve been turning to fashion rebels for inspiration.

As far as Old Hollywood style rebels go, you can’t get any better than Marlene Dietrich.  She is the Goddess of Menswear Fashion Glamour.  So when I saw photos recently of Kris Jenner’s Gatsby Themed Birthday party, I was so excited that Kourtney Kardashian channeled Ms. Dietrich and went with a sexy suit.

Don’t get me wrong, the other Kardashians looked stunning in their sparkly evening gowns (say what you want about the Kardashians, but the ladies know how to do luxury).  But Kourtney’s look, as simple as it was, was such a showstopper for me! I love how Kourtney tales risks with fashion.  When her family does a “theme”, she joins in but always does her own twist.

I went on a quest to recreate her look for the holiday season.  I wanted it to be affordable, and with my body type it was a challenge (blazers and boobs can be best friends or mortal frenemies).  I ended up ordering the pants and the blazer from two different brands.  I was pleasantly surprised that the fabrics went so well together.

Chanel Christmas in Paris Tablescape

Chanel Christmas in Paris Tablescape - EverydayStarlet.com @SarahBlodgett

Continuing my tradition of fashion designer inspired Holiday Tablescapes (see my Kate Spade Halloween, and my Valentino Thanksgiving), I needed big inspiration for a big holiday.  After seeing this Chanel N°5 display at Macy’s I knew that the legendary brand was perfect for a legendary holiday like Christmas.

Here’s how I got the look for this Chanel Christmas in Paris Tablescape:

I wanted to focus on a vintage, Coco Chanel look.  I used a burlap table runner and a tweed looking ribbon to evoke the feeling of a classic, timeless Chanel suit.

I found the tabletop dress form at Wayfair and added some pearl strands and a black bow with ribbon from Jo Ann Fabrics.  For my Chanel perfume vase, I found a rectangular vase at Michael’s and made my own label.  Instead of N°5 I used N°12 to symbolize the 12 days of Christmas.

Finding red roses was harder than I thought this time of year, but after trying several stores, I found them at my local Jo Ann fabrics, and I bought all they had left.

I found clear plastic Christmas tree ornaments at Jo Ann Fabrics, and cut out gold glitter Cs to make a Chanel symbol.  I glued them on to be sure they stayed put.  The shape of these ornaments remind me of perfume bottles!

I filled tall vases with pearl Christmas balls from Michael’s, and scattered a few more over the table.  After all, it’s a Chanel table, you can’t have too many pearls.

The Eiffel Tower is actually a jewelry holder I stumbled upon at Michaels, and I had a coupon so I got it half price!  I added some fairy lights that I had from my Summer Nights tablescape.  Actually, my boyfriend, PET, came up with the idea of adding the lights.  Who says men can’t be useful when decorating.

I finished the look with some pine garland from last years Christmas table.

As much as this is a tribute to Christmas and Chanel, I also feel like this is a tribute to how beautiful, strong and resilient Paris is.  After all they’ve been through, they deserve some Holiday Cheer!

Have you started your Christmas decorating yet?

Old Hollywood Glamour Holiday Makeup Look

Old Hollywood Glamour Holiday Makeup Look - EverydayStarlet.com @SarahBlodgett

As much as I love Christmas, and as excited as I get for the most wonderful time of the year, I refuse to celebrate it before Thanksgiving.  Christmas music and made-for-tv holiday movies have been on repeat for months now.  However, now that it’s officially December, I am fully embracing holiday cheer.  This weekend I’ll probably start watching my favorite Christmas movies.  There are so many that I love, and a few I need to watch for the first time this year. My absolute favorite has to be White Christmas.   It’s the ultimate in Starlet Christmas Glamour.  What could be more fabulous than a movie about showgirls and crooners putting together a Christmas show in Vermont.  So in honor of this classic film, I decided to do an Old Hollywood Glamour inspired Holiday Makeup Look.  It’s perfect for Christmas parties, Holiday Events, and, if you’re an Everyday Starlet, any day of the week!

DIY Embellished Boyfriend Jeans… the Easiest DIY Ever!

DIY Embellished Boyfriend Jeans... the Easiest DIY Ever! - EverydayStarlet.com @SarahBlodgett

With the Holiday Season upon us, sparkle is everywhere!  As a Starlet, I could not be happier!  I would add sparkle to just about anything.  So I was excited to see it even showing up on denim.

I’ve been seeing embellished boyfriend jeans popping up in fashion magazines.  They’re a great holiday option for a night out or a holiday party where you want to be casual yet still festive.  However, embellished denim can be expensive.

I’ve come up with the absolute easiest DIY ever.  I took some brooches (also a big trend right now) and pinned them on my boyfriend jeans.  This way you can control where you want the embellishment, and you can change up the same jeans to look brand new every night of the week (but don’t forget to do laundry eventually).

You can get this look with any brooches, just make sure they are secure so you don’t loose them, or worse, stab yourself.  Check your favorite stores for brooches, or find some vintage ones on Etsy.

Recipe for the Perfect Friendsgiving Outfit

Recipe for the Perfect Friendsgiving Outfit - EverydayStarlet.com @SarahBlodgett

Call me crazy (I’ve been called worse), but one of my favorite Thanksgiving traditions (besides mashed potatoes) is my yearly Friends Thanksgiving episode marathon.  One of my favorite ones is “The One Where Chandler Doesn’t Like Dogs.”  There’s a lot of reasons I love that episode.  One being, like Chandler, I also have a fear of dogs, and people react to me the same way… so it’s nice to feel like I’m not alone.

It also has the best Joey quotes…

…”this is all a moo point….. it’s like a cow’s opinion. It just doesn’t matter. It’s moo.”

and

“No one ever listens to me. When the package is this pretty, no one ever cares what’s inside.”

But what really makes this my favorite episode is Rachel’s outfit.  Watch the episode if you haven’t seen it.  Her basic black v-neck top and leather skirt and boots is so chic!

I decided to recreate this look for a perfect Friendsgiving outfit.  The skirt is a little fuller than Rachel’s… and I only dream of having Jennifer Aniston’s body… but I think this look could be perfect for Thanksgiving Day or even a Friendsgiving party.  Here’s why…

  • It’s all black, so splatters in the kitchen or spills at the table wouldn’t show.
  • The skirt is comfortable and roomy after a big meal…. and the faux leather can easily be wiped clean.
  • The boots are stylish, but flat for comfort.

Christmas Gift Guide 2015

Christmas Gift Guide 2015 - EverydayStarlet.com @SarahBlodgett

I must confess, I get my Holiday shopping done early.  Maybe it’s my years working in retail, or my social anxiety, but I just can’t handle the holiday crowds.  Over the past few years I’ve started to do all my shopping online.  It’s quicker, easier, and you can do it in your pajamas (you can wear them in stores as well… but a Starlet never would).  I actually do a lot of my shopping through Ebates now.  If you haven’t tried it, you need to!  I was skeptical at first, but with my shopping habit, it really pays off.  If you’d like to sign up for Ebates (and you should), I would love to invite you to join.

Note: Ebates is not sponsoring this post.  I get a bonus for referring you.  That bonus will go to making Everyday Starlet even better! I would never promote a product or service that I didn’t totally believe in.

Christmas Gift Guide 2015

To help you get some gift ideas for the Starlet in your life, or some present ideas you can add to your Christmas wish list, I have a Starlet Gift Guide.  Feel free to send this post to boyfriends, husbands, parents, friends, and/or independently wealthy relatives!

  • Hourglass Ambient Lighting Edit– This is on my wish list (I may have already purchased it during the Sephora VIB sale and snuck it in my Mom’s gift hiding spot with my name on it, wink wink).  This is THE makeup gift this year.  Hourglass is pricy, but their Ambient Lighting Powders give an inner glow that is unmatched.
  • Urban Decay Naked Smoky Palette– This has become my favorite eye shadow palette.  It makes a great gift for any makeup lover (see below for a bonus gift guide with more palette suggestions)
  • Starlet Lamp– Any Everyday Starlet will be ready for her closeup with this lamp.  It’s small, but gives off a lot of light.  It’s Old Hollywood Glam meets practical.  Note: Amazon has the best price for this lamp.
  • Christian Louboutin Lipstick– This may be the most expensive lipstick ever.  I haven’t tried it (yet), but the reviews have been great.  Think of this as a collector’s item for any beauty lover.
  • Your Beauty Mark by Dita Von Teese– Dita is one of my style icons.  She’s been talking about writing this book about DIY glamour for years.  I have be (im)patiently waiting for the release date… and it’s finally been announced!  The book will go on sale on Dec 1st.  That’s one week before my birthday, and I’ve made an agreement with my boyfriend.  I won’t buy this for myself if he agrees to give it to me as a birthday gift… I could never wait until Christmas for this one!
  • Mason Pearson Brush–  These brushes are expensive, but so worth it.  If you are buying a gift for a hair maven then this is the perfect choice!
  • Audrey at Home– For the Starlet who loves to cook, this book is all about Audrey Hepburn and her home life.  Including some of her favorite recipes.
  • Lush Relax– For the stressed out Starlet, you can’t go wrong with a gift from Lush.  This gift set includes my favorite Twilight bath bomb!
  • Dita Von Teese/Mac Lipstick Collaboration– This will be release mid-Dec, but it’s a great stocking stuffer idea for the Dita fan in your life!  It would make a great gift to go with her new book!
  • Tom Ford Fragrance–  Perfume is such a romantic gift.  I’ve been loving Tom Ford fragrances, especially the Noir and the Velvet Orchid (I tried the Black Orchid, but it just wasn’t for me).  They are pricey, but they make a great luxury gift.

Bonus

I mentioned a few makeup palettes above.  However, since they make such a great gift, I did a whole video reviewing my palette collection.   I have plenty of suggestions for which palettes make the best Christmas gift ideas and stocking stuffers!

Navy Glam Makeup Look

Navy Glam Makeup Look - EverydayStarlet.com @SarahBlodgett

Some days you just never know where inspiration will come from.  When Jaelan & Miranda from The Makeup Mixup chose the prompt for this week, Game Day Glam, I was a little stumped at first.   This time of year, “game day” in New England can only mean the New England Patriots.  Since I’ve already done a red, white, and blue makeup look, I racked my brain to think of something different.  I started thinking about those football fans who paint their faces in team colors.  I also thought about players putting black smears under their eyes.  Don’t ask me how it happened, but I was inspired to do a dramtic navy smokey eye with a nude lip. I would definitely wear this look to see Tom Brady throw around the ol’ pigskin (and play football, wink, wink)… your move, Gisele!

Mode has some ideas for Football Tailgating Treats…

Winter Fashion: Tips for Looking Stylish in Cold Weather

Winter Fashion: Tips for Looking Stylish in Cold Weather - EverydayStarlet.com @SarahBlodgett

Whenever I seen people from warm climates like Los Angeles show winter fashion ideas for the holiday season, I just have to chuckle to myself.  It’s mostly out of jealousy.  I’d love to wear bare legs and open toed shoes in December.  But alas, I am an New Englander, so that is just a pipe dream.

New England Winters are of legend, but last years was especially bad.  When you’re freezing your tootsies off, the last thing you want to think about is style.  But it is possible to look chic when the temperature drops.  You just need to know a few tricks…

Start with a fabulous coat

A statement coat is a must for Winter months.  The one I’m wearing is an affordable one from Forever 21.  However, if you live a cold climate, a coat that makes you feel both warm and fabulous is always a great investment.

Winter Fashion: Tips for Looking Stylish in Cold Weather - EverydayStarlet.com @SarahBlodgett

Top it off with a great hat

Hats are having a moment right now.  You can find some great wool options that will look stylish and keep your head warm.

Winter Fashion: Tips for Looking Stylish in Cold Weather - EverydayStarlet.com @SarahBlodgett

Throw on a scarf

A scarf is never a bad idea… we even wear them in the Summer now.  But Winter is when they go from being just fashion to being function as well.  You can go basic if you’re wearing a statement coat, or wear a simple coat and go bold with a scarf in a fun color or texture.  I’ve just picked up a faux fur one that I can’t wait to wear.

Winter Fashion: Tips for Looking Stylish in Cold Weather - EverydayStarlet.com @SarahBlodgett

Cover your legs

If you’re a dress/skirt kinda girl, then tights are a must.  You can even layer tights under pants for extra warmth.

Winter Fashion: Tips for Looking Stylish in Cold Weather - EverydayStarlet.com @SarahBlodgett

Don’t forget your feet

Snow boots have become more stylish over the years.  If it’s really rainy, snowy, or icy then you may need a special shoe (pick a great pair, like duck boots which are getting very popular).  If it’s just cold then layer some warm socks in your favorite boots to make them extra cozy.

Winter Fashion: Tips for Looking Stylish in Cold Weather - EverydayStarlet.com @SarahBlodgett

It’s also a good idea to have a great pair of gloves on hand (pun intended), and maybe a winter headband/headwrap that can be layered under your hat to keep your ears warm in extreme cold.

How to Stay Healthy Through the Holidays: Health, Food, & Fitness Tips

How to Stay Health Through the Holidays: Health, Food, & Fitness Tips - EverydayStarlet.com @SarahBlodgett

The Holiday season can be a stressful time for everyone.  There’s good-but-exhausting things like parties, and so not-so-great things like maxing out your credit card on gifts.  If you live in a cold climate like New England, seasonal depression can also start taking it’s toll.  In this season of giving to others it can be so easy to neglect your own needs and even your health.  Here are some tips for how to stay health through the Holidays and getting you through to January with your body and mind taken care of…

Food

Healthy options

You can call me weird (wouldn’t be the first time, won’t be the last), but I get a little thrill out of taking an indulgent recipe and making it healthier but still delicious.  It’s all about experimenting with great substitutions.  Are you all about toast slathered in butter on Christmas morning?  Try whole grain toast with some coconut oil.  It’s just as yummy, and will keep you fuller longer so you won’t be tempted to grab extra rolls at dinner.

Pick your pleasure

Holiday time is not the time to deprive yourself, but it’s important not to gorge of everything in sight.  Do you live for a slice of pumpkin pie but care less about stuffing?  Then skip the stuffing (or just have a little) and treat yourself to a big slice o’ pie.  Save your calories for the things that matter to you.

Make it homemade

I know it can be tempting to cut corners and go store-bought, but the more of your holiday meals you make yourself the better.  You can control the ingredients, and make sure you’re not filling up on artificial chemicals that are going to make you even hungrier, or worse, make you sick.  Plus, I feel much less guilty about eating Christmas cookies when I know I’ve burned a ton of calories baking them myself.

Be a food snob

Sometimes it’s not the food itself that’s the issue, it’s the chemicals and artificial sweeteners.  My rule is that if I’m going to indulge, I make it the best quality indulgence.  Don’t waste calories on cheap pre-dinner crackers… save them for a post-dinner macaron from a special bakery.

How to Stay Health Through the Holidays: Health, Food, & Fitness Tips

Fitness

Make time to exercise

Between the weather and the craziness it can be so easy to forget about fitness.  But it’s so important for your body and mind to fit it in.  Too cold outside? Go to the gym, or do a workout DVD.  No time?  I’ve been loving the Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred. It’s only 20 min, it’s an effective, full-body workout…and I promise you’ll enjoy it even if you don’t think you’re a Jillian Michaels fan (I wasn’t).

How to Stay Health Through the Holidays: Health, Food, & Fitness Tips

Get in touch with your inner yogi

There is nothing like a yoga session to calm your mind and keep you sane.  If you’ve tried yoga but thought it was too intense, too serious, or just too expensive, I highly recommend Yoga with Adriene.  Her workouts are free on YouTube, and you can pick one that fits your time limit and/or mood.  I’m definitely going to be trying her Yoga for Digestion on Thanksgiving.

Calm your mind

Along the same lines of yoga, meditation is so important.  Some times we just need some peace.  I really love the calm app because you can pick the length of time that you want to meditate.  I usually do 5-10 mins, but when I travel and I have trouble getting to sleep I’ve done the 30 min mediation and had some of the best nights sleep ever!

How to Stay Health Through the Holidays: Health, Food, & Fitness Tips

Mental Health

We can’t neglect our mental health as well.  I made a video all about my struggles with anxiety and depression and some tips I have for dealing with it.  I hope this video encourages others to talk about their struggles and to feel a little less alone….
