Starlet’s Dream Closets

It should be no surprise that Starlets tend to have a lot of clothes.  The amount of fashion they collect can get overwhelming, so she needs a lot of space.  She’ll need space for her wardrobe basics, accessories, and undergarments.  If space allows, this is also where a Starlet will have a place for doing her makeup.  Here are some Starlet closets for inspiration.

Every Starlet closet needs….
A glamorous chair for lounging while deciding what to wear
A vanity for makeup and her perfume collection (she stores the extras in glamorous hat boxes)

A glamorous jewelry box
Storage for hats
Shelves for a vast shoe collection
Drawers for storage (the vintage heads are optional)
Stay tuned for glamorous bathrooms

In a Starlet’s Bedroom

Everyone wants to see a Starlet’s bedroom, but very few get the privilege.  Starlets love to lounge in their beds.  Their bedrooms should be comfortable, but also glamorous and sensual.  It should be feminine but not so much that she scares off her leading man.

Here is some bedroom decorating inspiration from….
Jean Harlow
The film Top Hat
Jayne Mansfield
Marilyn Monroe
Audrey Hepburn
Lana Turner
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
Elizabeth Taylor

Mad Men
 Dita Von Teese

Also in a Starlet’s Bedroom

A Starlet will always have a TV in her bedroom for watching her favorite movies and TV shows… and she will always have tissues on her nightstand (sometimes the dramatic scenes make her cry)

Entertaining, Starlet Style: Fashion

To finish out our basic entertaining series (including basic party planning, cocktails, and food), we need to talk about fashion!  When entertaining at home a Starlet looks for outfits that have a combination of comfort and glamour.  Hostess dresses are basically very glamorous pajamas, and they fit the bill.  If that is a little too casual for you, you can go with a kaftan like Elizabeth Taylor, or some capri pants and top like Jayne Mansfield.   Here are some looks for inspiration….

Many Starlets will go barefoot to give their guests a casual feeling… she never wants her guests to feel uptight.  As a result, a pre-party pedicure is a must… as well as a manicure and a trip to her hairdresser.
Happy Entertaining!

Entertaining Like A Starlet: Food, Glorious Food

Now that we’ve covered party planning and fun cocktails…. it’s time for tasty treats!  A party is not a party without food.  The type of food depends on the type of party, and Starlets have a few types of parties they throw.  Here are some options for what to serve at each…

Cocktails Parties

click here Canapés and tapes options are endless, and here are some Starlet favorites for cocktail party finger foods…
buy cheap generic cialis online canadian pharmacy Salami and/or cheese with toothpicks (so easy and you can mix and match cheeses, salami, veggies, and herbs)
buy generic sildenafil citrate Stuffed Cherry tomatoes (Marilyn Monroe loved hers with cream cheese and caviar, but if fish eggs aren’t your thing try bacon or truffles)

Egg rolls (get frozen ones and thaw in the oven)
Deviled eggs (any kind, from a basic recipe passed down from generations… to elegant truffles)
Mushroom caps (the stuffing options are endless)

Shrimp cocktail (with cocktail sauce from a jar to save time)
Fonduecheese or chocolate
Pigs in a blanket (some assembly required)
Stuffed Strawberries

Dinner Parties

Marilyn Monroe was known for her dinner parties, and they were very 1950s.  She usually served some kind of meat and potatoes…but sometimes she’d go Mexican (Dita Von Teese told InStyle magazine that she also loves Mexican food and likes to host taco nights for friends…. just assemble a buffet of taco ingredients and make some margaritas).

For most Starlets, a dinner party menu is about simple foods presented elegantly.

Hors D’oeuvres or Salad

A Starlet may serve an item from the above cocktail menu list or start with a simple green salad

Main Dish

A main course may consist of steak or lamb chops (if the weather is warm, she may have her leading man break out the grill).  She may also serve something simple like scrabbled eggs on toast.  Dita Von Teese loves to make her signature chicken pot pie for guests (this is a one pot wonder, so side dishes are not necessary)

Side Dishes

There will be some kind of vegetable like creamed spinach, and usually a potato (probably baked)… but Marilyn famously tried homemade noodle for a dinner party (with not so successful results)

Desserts

A dinner wouldn’t be complete without something sweet, but a Starlet doesn’t want everyone to feel so stuffed that they fall asleep after dinner, so she may go with something light like ice cream… bonus is it’s homemade

These are famous photos of Marilyn Monroe and her husband at the time Arthur Miller at a dinner party with her at the time costar (and rumored lover) Yves Montand and his wife Simone Signoret. Simone was the hostess, but I saved an old Gourmet Magazine where they broke down the menu for the evening…

  • Spaghetti and Meatballs in red sauce
  • Green salad
  • Bread
  • Cream Puffs and éclairs (ordered from room service)
  • A bottle of Château Lafite Rothschild
  • Milk

Girls Night

For an impromptu girls night at home a Starlet may make things easy on herself and order Chinese food and make tea.

Potluck

A potluck can be fun because Starlets don’t have to do all the work.  So if you have friends that are handy in the kitchen, then invite friends to each bring their favorite dish.  Dita Von Teese posted a Vine of a potluck party she hosted and while I don’t have the recipes, I managed to make a list of the menu…

Entertaining Like a Starlet: Cocktails

Now that we’ve discussed how to prep for a Starlet party, we can take a look at what to serve. No matter what type of party a Starlet is throwing, you can be sure there will be cocktails.  Now every Starlet has her favorite cocktails, but for a party she will generally choose classic cocktails (think Mad Men) that have simple ingredients.

A Starlet will rarely hire a bartender no matter how big the party, but, if she has a leading man in her life (whether it be a husband, boyfriend, or gay best friend) she will usually leave him in charge of mixing drinks.

Bonus Points if he looks like Don Draper

She will also have a bar area with all the tools necessary to make libations, as well as a cabinet or cupboard with variety of glasses.  She may even collect vintage cocktail glasses and likes to mix and match so guests each have a unique glass (that way everyone knows which glass is theirs).

Also note: when purchasing liquor and juices (never a pre-mix, always go fresh), plan on one cocktail per person per hour…. and plenty of champagne!

Here are some classic cocktail options….

1 1/2 oz vodka
3/4 oz dry vermouth
Shake vodka and vermouth together with several ice cubes in a shaker. Strain into a cocktail glass, garnish with an olive and serve.

2 ounces rye or blended whiskey
3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon superfine sugar or simple syrup
Slice of orange or lemon (or both) and a maraschino cherry
Shake the whiskey, lemon juice, and sugar vigorously with ice; then strain over ice into a chilled cocktail glass, Old Fashioned glass, or highball glass. Garnish with an orange or lemon slice (or both) and a maraschino cherry.
2 ounces gin
 Juice from half a lemon
 1 teaspoon superfine sugar
 4 ounces cold club soda
Slice of lemon and a maraschino cherry
Shake gin, lemon juice, and sugar with ice, then pour into a chilled collins glass filled with ice.
Add club soda and garnish with lemon slice and maraschino cherry.

1 1/2 oz Rémy Martin VSOP cognac
3/4 oz Cointreau
3/4 oz Fresh Lemon Juice
Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass. Shake vigorously with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
Garnish with a sugar-rim.
Cointreau has a variety of versions of their Rickeys.  You can pick whichever one suits your party theme

.. and if your party has a Mexican or Summertime theme, you can choose from Cointreau’s selection of Margaritas

Entertaining at Home, Starlet Style

Its no secret that Starlets, love to entertain… stage, screen, at home…. anywhere!  When entertaining at home a Starlet likes low key parties… after all, her life is always so exciting when she leaves the house that her time at home is a place for relaxation… or maybe seduction.

Guest List

Many times a Starlet can feel like her life is on display.  She may feel like people are always talking about her… (and if you’re truly living like a Starlet, they probably are)… so her home is her sanctuary.  So a Starlet is very selective about who she invites into her lair.  She will only invite close friends and people she trusts (Marilyn Monroe even had a list of guest rules for her gatherings).

  • If you must indulge in gardening—use your own garden.

  • Show appreciation to your hostess.

  • No gossip please (“Why, she is at least 40!”).
  • It is quite proper to bring a present.
  • Please do not steal our cook.
  • Ashtrays means for ashes.
  • Even our whiskey supply has it limitations.

When selecting a guest list, a Starlet will also try to invite people of similar interests, and for dinner parties, she will handwrite place cards and seat in traditional boy/girl/boy/girl format.

Theme

Sometimes holidays provide a theme and other times a Starlet will create her own, but every party has a theme.  The options are endless!  Glamour Goddess Dita Von Teese has garden arts parties where she invites all of her guests to bring an artistic endeavor to share.

Party Prep

Before a party a Starlet will get domestic and do a good old fashioned housecleaning (Marilyn Monore actually loved to vacuum).

Décor

Starlets love glamour, but they don’t go over the top with party décor.  She likely collects vintage vases and bowls, so some fresh flowers (Audrey Hepburn’s favorite) and some fresh fruits along with some candles for ambiance will do the trick.
In an interview with New Potato, Dita says, when asked what new thing she’d like to have when hosting a get together she said…

“My antique typewriter for guests to write notes on.”

This one’s mine!

And, it’s always nice to leave guests with a favor.  It can be as simple as a recipe card with a cocktail or menu recipe on it.

Music

Every party requires its hostess to set the mood and music is the perfect way to do that.  The style of music depends of the theme and the guest list.  When in doubt, a Starlet always goes with Frank Sinatra and other classic artists.
Dita Von Tesse has her ultimate entertaining playlist on Spotify.  I’ll be breaking down the Soundtrack to a Starlet’s life in a future post, so keep an eye out for it.

Activities

Some party themes lend themselves to certain activities, and some are just about socializing.  Starlets love games (card games, charades, board games) and may break them out for some parties, but her sparkling conversation are usually entertainment enough.

Starlets in a Snowstorm

Not all Everyday Starlets live in sunny California.  Some, like me, live far from it.  Here in New England we are having major snow storm… but for a true Starlet that just means an opportunity to break out the chic outerwear, and maybe play in the snow.  Here are some Starlets at their snow bunny best…

Silver Screen Style: Charade

Nothing is better on a cold New England New Years Eve than snuggling with someone you love and watching a movie.  This past NYE, my boyfriend suggested the Cary Grant/Audrey Hepburn classic Charade (I know, how lucky am I).  I can’t believe I had never seen this film before.  It was funny, suspenseful, and definitely entertaining… but I couldn’t get past how timeless Audrey Hepburn’s fashion was.  Here are some of her looks for inspiration…
